Spray Hydrogen Peroxide On Cake's?
    #14316281 - 04/19/11 09:35 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

should i or should i not spray down fully colonized cake with Hydrogen Peroxide? i found a good pictorial telling u to do this after u birth your cake:

Before you place the cake into the FC spray the ENTIRE surface of the cake with Hydrogen Peroxide right out from the bottle! Do not dilute solution. You want it dripping off the cake just to know it got into every nook and cranny. Listen to it sizzle its kool

lol, you trying to kill the myc? DON'T DO IT!

Tap water is fine for a fully colonized cake

you can spray the side walls, a lil mist wont hurt the cakes, and put some in in the bottom in with the peril;ite, but i would vote against direct saturation of the cakes.

:whathesaid:

"hearing a sizzle" is a sign that the peroxide is working & killing something. That sizzle on a cake would be the myc. I'm just curious as to why you would spray a cake down w/ peroxide? What's the added benefit vs. water?

supposedly its prevents any green mold or black spots etc... from growing in case there is contamination on the outside of the cake as an extra percussion it seemed to work in the pics cuz mushrooms were growing.

A fully colonized cake is extremely contam resistant.

Just like properly pasteurized bulk, when spawning to bulk. How do you think we do bulk grows? We can't put a mono tub inside our SAB or GB & most won't fit in front of a flowhood.

I'm just saying it's completely unnecessary, and will probably mess with your grow.

I can show you a picture of a grow & say I shit in the substrate, then pasteurized it, but it's not going to work if you tried. Catch my drift? You don't really know if that person really sprayed the whole cake down w/ peroxide.

My recommendation, as previously stated, is DON'T DO IT!

Funny shit.....

Please, dont spray H²O² on your cakes unless it is neccessary (cobweb).

You should go back to the tek that said to douche your cakes in h2o2 and make a note that the OP is an idiot and nobody should follow it.

Just a word on the potential hazards of Hydrogen Peroxide. My mother recently found a source for 100% pure, food grade H202 and information on taking it internally as part of a holistic therapy. Unfortunately, her caregiver did not at all research how to administer it. My mother ended up taking several times the recommended dosage for weeks and now has horrible burn like rashes both internally and externally. H202 is not something to use without caution, for fungi nor other living organisms.
(this product is also highly unstable and labeling warns of risk of explosion from lack of refrigeration or from dropping the container)
Mmmmmm, yummy!

I know that would never happen to me because I know the dangers of H2O2, but IMO, that caregiver needs to be sued into the ground.  I'm also amazed you were able to find 100% H2O2 and buy it without any problems.  It is one of those chemicals that is so dangerous, I would never want it in my house.  If it spills, it WILL start a fire.  There is no question about it.  35% is dangerous enough as it is.

EDIT: I realize I must have misunderstood.  It's "100% pure", but it's not 100% H2O2.  It's probably 30 or 35% concentration.

I'm not actually 100% positive on the concentration, I'd have to go to her house and look at the bottle. I know it's very strong. The caregiver is her friend, roommate and business partner and an RN that needs to retire. I ask her what to do sometimes and then do the opposite. I hate that she's my mother's main caregiver and personal Nurse.

This study observed the effect of temperature and hydrogen peroxide concentration on Pleurotus mycelium. This study also investigated the effects of hydrogen peroxide on bacterial growth. The study showed that concentrations of hydrogen peroxide of 0.016% (v/v) had an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth (reduced bacterial colony formation by half compared to 0% H2O2) and had a slightly stimulatory effect on mycelial growth. The mycelium became adversely effected upon application of H2O2 solutions of >0.025% H2O2. The study showed that bacterial growth was greater at 0.01% H2O2 than it was at 0% H202. H202 might play a stimulatory role in the organisms, until the point at which their tissues cannot resist the oxidizing power of H2O2.

Experimentation is the key, though. The study showed that each of the 8 strains of Pleurotus had their own species specific tolerances to temperature and hydrogen peroxide concentration. The usefulness of H2O2 in Psilocybe growing can only be elucidated by direct experimentation.

I thought the idea of using hydrogen peroxide on my cakes was a ridiculous idea until I found out what it should be utilized for. I thought my cake was okay, but due to spores in the air landing on my substrate caused what looked like dense white bumpy, clumpped together mycelium and about six hrs later the patch was almost completely green. I have some other cakes going so I decided to dissect the cake and there really is no way of stopping it. I've heard people use a lysol covered spoon to scoop out any green mold when it's first spreading, and even then you may not have gotten rid of it. The peroxide is also great because it kills cobweb mold, and requires you to spray the cake with the peroxide to kill the cobweb. Simply mist the cake, do not coat the cake with it. Hydrogen peroxide is great for those out there fanning their FCs because misting the air before opening the lid allows the peroxide to kill any spores that may contaminate your whole cake like mine did. When I swabbed the green area with a q tip, the green soaked the q tip. Hydrogen peroxide is great for preventing contamination and will always keep a bottle within arms reach. Eventhough the peroxide kills mycelium, a small amount can be misted over your casing if you begin to spot cobwebs. You'll know it when you see it.
