Is it possible
    #20629966 - 09/28/14 09:53 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

And what would it look like if you transferred a clean piece of myc to a new plate, then a short distance away from that myc a mold spore landed and in 2-3 days the myc "ran" over the spot where it landed?

I'm sure the mold spore would germinate right? What would this plate look like by the time the myc grew almost to the edge of the plate? How likely is it that the mold spore wouldn't germinate by the time the plate grew out and you cut it up to inoculate with?

Jesus. This is hypothetical. If I knew the plate was dirty why would I be asking about an invisible mold spore that hasn't germinated?

Just curious to know how it would all go down.

You probably wouldn't know. That's why proper procedure is important and periodic dry runs to monitor your sterile media is important. If you have doubts then go through the motions and see what turns up.

However that being said it is possible the myc would just eat the spore if it had not germinated.

I have a plate of reishi that's eaten slime molds, black mold,  and a green mold.

I can toss up pics later... pasteurizing today...

Spooky. All the more reason to have a hood lol. Apparently try as I might, I just suck balls at sab innoculations.

with agar you don't need to worry too much, with grains be super careful.

can't remove a. contam from a jar like you can a plate

A hood is no easier than a SAB other than ergonomically. If your procedure with an SAB is not up too par a hood is unlikely to help much. You also need a SAB to clean up cultures anyway so its a good skill to have regardless of whether you have a hood or not.

Hood work is quite different in some aspects. You worry more about "first air" what you have down stream, etc. Sab is just creeping around trying not to disturb anything that has settled.

I'm either too fast, clumsy, or there's just too much shit floating in my house for me to work comfortably. Likely a combo of all of the above.

drafty house?

that's my problem here...
I can do pretty good at sab work, but almost always get a contam due to drafts in my apt.

kinda sucks

I dunno I have 2 dogs and my house is far from clean. Clean SAB work has never been much of a problem. Like I said before, you still need a SAB to clean up cultures so I would want that skill regardless.

I could probably do transfers in a room full of mold and still have them come out clean.

Probably from having a few tubs explode in here, living in a heavy allergy area anyway, maybe my arm holes let in drafts, maybe a squirrel farts and like the butterfly effect I get a contam.

Whatever the combination of reasons I can't get much done in my sab. At least with the hood I can all but rule out sab mishaps and running it for a while to scrub the air should help with my sab success rates as well.

I figured I'd throw a little bit more money at this hobby before I quit. Plus I got my blower  and filter both for under $175 so I can likely sell my hood and get most all my monies back.

so to show you the answer to your question, what does myc look like if it has consumed a contam underneath it?

This is Reishi myc, so it is slightly different than cube myc, but you see the outcome.

i also feel that when myc does this it is also contamed

that fuzzy leading edge, i bet ya there is a contam growing along with the myc, where as the other leading edges are hard and distinct.

What happens if you put Reishi in with cube myc, who wins out?

As for the question of having problems with a sab, OP if you think you're environment is dirty can't you try some sab work in another room or another house, or some other place to see if that's the real problem?

It's likely just me coupled with a semi dirty environment. Several locations have been tried with not much to show for it.

So yeah, just me lol. I've tried doing everything every which way as well. Totally changing technique, fine tuning, and still I don't have an acceptable failure rate.

my money is on the reishi... it clearly eats contams that stop cubes in their tracks...

I've tried sleeves, gloves, mask, lysol all around, IPA everywhere, a small voodoo dance, I once sacrificed a 3 year old to the mush gods but I forgot to flame sterilize

Probably be the simplest route eh? Funny how I don't wanna spend the cash to order a syringe but I'm more than happy to go flow hood shopping. Go Fucking figure.
