An unusual method with good results so far.

I have been having issues with supplying enough light to my sgfc, and after a few successful trials I have found a solution. My sgfc needs to live in a dark spot in my home. In its location I can't expose it to light, and I'm not comfortable running an extension cord to it. (Long story, house fire when I was a kid) I tried using little bits of light when I could, and always got very small yields of very small shrooms that grew incredibly slowly. So one evening I'm laying in my tanning bed and start wondering if I could get them enough light by letting them suntan. Turns out I sure can! My sgfc lives in total darkness for 23 hours and 53 minutes per day now, and spends 7 minutes a day catching some rays in the tanning bed. I went from getting maybe 2.5 dry grams per pf cake to 8-10! Nothing else in my method has changed except using the tanning bed for 7 minutes instead of sitting in front of a window for 2 hours a day.
I have lurked this site for years, but never made a post before now. I've searched but haven't found any posts relating to a tanning bed for lighting. Just curious as to what thoughts you all may have on my method, or if there's a sign of over exposure to uv rays I should watch for with my mushies.

aren't tanning beds really bad for you?
i think they'd be bad for shrooms too but they could use small exposure, guess that works well for yu then:)
maybe blue battery light of some type would work? they like blue spectrum light

A few minutes of light a day won't do much...
As far as your results, MS is a crapshoot of genetics, and because of this your results may just be from good genetics.

the fact you have to hide your sgfc sounds more like you're than a :pig: to me.. you shouldn't grow if you have to hide it, consider the others you're setting at risk because of your actions.

if you dont live with others that dont know you're growing why would you have to hide your sgfc? just put it in the middle of a room.
who lives with others (read: parents) who dont want them to grow?:

The way you explained your situation sounds fishy. Some of us have been here quite a while. We have seen all sorts of shit here.
Spacechildo has a point. If you cant give your mushrooms the proper environment, it leaves us wondering why. Light is important for the grow process. A tanning bed is extreme. 7 minutes is not enough for the mushies. They need a lot more consistency with lighting. Preferably a blue 6500k light. A tanning bed has a higher risk of causing a fire than an extension cord.

Dude. I haven't lived with my parents in almost 20 years. Your weird and completely off the mark attacks and allegations speak more about you than me. Who are you trying to impress?
Not that it matters, but I live in a small studio apartment that I run an office out of. People come and go,and there are only a few spaces that are out of sight. They happen to be dark closets.
Putting your shit out in the middle of the room might be a good idea to you, but to me it just smacks of stupidity. Save the smarmy lectures for someone who actually harms or risks someone else. I don't.
I don't feel like my tanning bed is as likely to catch on fire while I can see it run for a few minutes, as an extension cord going into a closet and running a light for 12 hours. Shrug. Friendly place this is.

If you use a heavy duty extension cord, it will be just fine......
If extension cords freak you out, don't ever look behind my desk.....
Not like a 23 watt CFL if pulling that much juice that it's going to fry a wire anyways.....
Just sayin, youd be fine running a simple light fixture in there on a 12/12 schedule.....

Understandable, however there are lights that are harmless i.e. give off little to no heat. LED's work flawlessly as they produce the perfect color and temp while giving off little to no heat. Years back I found christmas lights that were 6500k. They were really pricey though. A strand of 50 went for about $35 and I have yet to find them anywhere on the internet. I should have purchased more. If a fire risk is what you fear, go with LED's. You can find waterproof strands on amazon for $5.
In general, if you run a business from your place you might want to reconsider growing at all. Good luck to your growing endeavors.

It's possible they like blue to UV but UV can also damage their genetics. If you are afraid of extension cords attach a 3 prong outdoor rated cord to a surge protector. Most older electric fires start due to damage to cords and shorting.

Lol I didn't realize it was me who was reacting strongly. Seems like that would be you. I'm sure I'll sleep fine knowing you don't want to give me help I never asked you for.
Thanks other guy for the battery led tip though. Didn't know they existed. Our house burned down when I was five from an extension cord in the garage. A phobia of extension cords being unattended resulted. Yes it's irrational, as are all phobias. Lol
