At what step do you cold shock a casing?
    #2060095 - 10/31/03 08:49 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Ok folks I've been reading some of the Grow Log teks, and it left me with a question...

I'm casing PF cakes on strait verm. When should I cold shock?

a) Before the cakes are birthed? (just the cake)
b) After the cakes are birthed? (just the cake)
c) Just after the casing is put together (shock the casing)
or
d) When the casing is ready to fruit? (shock the casing)

The last time I shocked just after I birthed the cakes (b), but now I wonder if I can't improve things with better timing.

Any thoughts?

d. In a natural environment, pins begin to form when the mycelium hits the cooler, fresh air.

Right before you put the casing into the fruiting chamber.

What I did, Is i just cold shocked/dunked all of my cakes, then when they were finished, half got rolled in verm, the other half i crumbled up into casings. that was one day more than a week ago, cakes got some pins, no sign of pins from casing yet, but a nice lightly even mycelium cover on it.

I'd cold shock when you want it to pin, along with a good exposure to a light cycle right after (and temps lowered to 75 F.) If you're casing that should be after the mycelium has colonized the casing a bit -- when you see spots of mycelium poking through evenly around the casing.

Hmmm, seems to be a little difference of opinion here. I suspect shocking at anyone of these times wont hurt anything....I'll play around with it for a little while, trying different times, and I'll report my findings afterwards. This next time I think I'll shock after the casing's birth.

Happy Halloween everybody !!

'cold-shock is to make mcye feel more that it's time to fruit' in my opinion and it's also in the faqs,so is there any needs to experiment on natural laws ,however you can check also if gravity works or not but life is too short for all these second times.Go and search some amanitas!Peace.

if it's cubensis, don't worry about it. it's fun to do, sure, but it'll fruit without a cold shock.

if you do want to do it, do it just before it's exposed to fruiting conditions, like angry said.
edit: options b and c above are crazy - if you have cakes, you want the protection of the glass while they are in your contam-ridden fridge; and if casing, again, there's no point chilling it if you plan to reincubate before fruiting.

I don't think the fridge is a bad idea -- it's a really easy way to cold shock casings (or cakes.) If it's really dirty, though, clean it out, first (it only takes 2 minutes.)

I've done this many, many times, though, and I've never had a problem. My fridge is pretty dirty, anyway.

This guy I know puts his in a plastic bag (roughly sealed) even after cleaning.
