that seems like a great idea, it would provide a more even heating than the stove (so the bottom would not be hotter than the rest) and maintain the temps better than a cooler or trashcan. only limitation would be that you could not put to much in there. unless they make some giant crockpot i am not aware of.

Hey, I was wondering the same thing, you got one of those too? I'm too lazy to make sure it goes to 170 degrees it does right?

Crock pots are meant to slowly simmer casseroles/soups and would probably not produce enough heat for pasteurisation.

I would seriously consider steaming or microwaving straw instead of using a crockpot. Here are a few links from the Cultivation FAQ that could be of assistance to you.

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23371
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23373

Additionally, here is an extract from http://www.nansnook.com/archives/2668.html that warns against boiling straw.

"You shouldn't boil the straw, because there is a balance in naturally occuring fauna (good bacteria) and if you boil the straw you'll kill these, inviting contamination. Pasteurizing the straw preserves this balance while interrupting any fungal spores etc that are undesirable. It's very important not to boil the straw. Get a candy thermometer to monitor the temp. Pasteurization occurs in the range 160-180F. "

Even the FAQ says it though...pcing kills the beneficial bacterias that can ward off contams..pasturizing keeps the good bacteria which benefits the mycellium, and isnt that what its all about? lol

I simply use a large pot and a long thermometer. I turn the heat to high and when the temperature reaches 160 I turn the heat down to medium. I watch the thermometer and when it reaches 155 I play with it until it stays there. It's pretty easy, actually.

I can't speak for other people but I've PCed straw on low for 5 mins @ 10 PSI and never had contams.

hanky, instead of trying to disprove everything why don't you try and contribute something useful to the conversation for once? Everytime I read one of your posts you seem to be attacking the validit of someone's information, which I personally see as a very un-Australian thing to do.

when someone says that PC'ing straw is a good idea, refuting this is contributing something useful to the conversation. if information is not valid, it should be "attacked". PC'ing straw is not a good idea. hanky is right.

Shirley, how was that being nasty? I think your calling me names is being more nasty than I was to hanky.

mushmaster, as far as I can see hanky never actually said anything about PCing straw being a bad idea. What he said was implied, and might I add he did it in a very sardonic manner. I have since corrected my posts and regret even posting in the first place. Aside from that small discrepancy, I thought that my post was generally informative and helpful.

If this is the way that the community acts, attacking a fellow member who unknowingly provides incorrect information, than it is not the kind of place that I want to be.

Sorry for wasting your time.

before you go shamanorrhea, can you enlighten me on what the "australian way" to do it is?
both my ancestors came out on the 1st fleet as convicts(yes i'm proud) and i was wondering how an expert on my culture thinks "we"should be?
