Mushrooms Maturing too Fast, cause?
    #2062643 - 11/01/03 02:23 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

100+ pins of Mazatapec double-end vermiculite casing... in about a 7in. x 7in. container...

the only problem is the mushrooms maturing too early... what could be the cause of this?

You are simply growing too efficiently. Do what you did this time next time, but make a mistake or two.

Sorry, I translated that into "mushrooms growing to fast". Could you have a co2 problem?

Lol! Yeah -- it also has a lot to do with the strain. Che is absolutely right, though. If you get a really good pinset, this can happen sometimes. Just means you're doing everything right!

Unless they're really long and skinny, usually maturing too fast (cap opening too fast) just means the mycelium didn't "think" it could support that big of a flush.

A much deeper substrate (like straw) can help this problem.

I think it's very cool how one can "think like a mushroom (or myc. network)" and arrive at the answer. For instance, as per your reply, the myc., based on nutrient supply, will pin as much (and mature as many shroomies) as possible to assure as many evenly distributed spores as possible.

in my experience with mazapatec just double end casing the cake will provide small fruits that mature in 2-3 days. id say avg. fruit size of 2 - 3 inches, most under a gram dry. Get some straw and poo up in there, with some coir to case, you will see notably larger fruits... even if u were only to do a small 6X6" pan u will see much better production. I've seen mazapatecs up to 10" tall using straw / poo. compared to the largest fruit of like 4inches that i saw off of the cakes

led i had this same prob with 3 casing of popcorn (strain lipa yai). ended up with hundreds of little guys that were a bitch to clean, everything went great up until the end. had a perfect pinset and things looked so promising then BAM bunches and bunches of little 1 to 2 inchers. ended up with less than 1/2 ounce from first flush.

to try and fix things for the second, i dropped the humidity and gave better air exchange. so far things are looking up, still not great but better than before. got some 3in+ and still have some that are opening awful small.

looks as though from now on i am moving on to spawning my grains to help with this problem. got some going now on straw so time will tell.

best of luck to you.

dcx, what was your yield from double-end casing mazatapecs?

Lol! I love doing that when I'm growing. Mushrooms are so fucking strange -- that's why I love growing them.

That was based off something in TMC, too, though -- Stamets said a higher pinset will create smaller mushrooms, but greater overall yield (especially since later flushes tend to be bigger.) From putting 2+2 together, and experience, I know this is true, and really deep substrates don't do that. I've had the problem a lot before, and everything was fine, except I had like 1000 1" mushrooms.

This guy I know can't wait to grow again--happens every time he visits the shroomery. He also found that deeper substrate and better gas exchange could turn a monster pin set into an obscenely large flush (esp. when poo is involved).

Yeah; right?  It's a great hobby, but I had to stop before because I ended up with too many mushrooms, and nothing to do with them

I'm thinking of starting a (small) project now....  I wouldn't mind tripping again....  maybe I'll take pics....

I'm growing PR's (my favorite) but I was thinking of trying azures....  I don't know if I'll be able to get alder or maple chips when I need them, though; they might be frozen.  I think FungiPerfecti sells some, though.

My idea is to crack open a window a certain amount during the winter to make the room 50 degrees (and maybe more to cold shock....)

Ghetto style....

Right on. Looking forward to seeing those if you post some pics. Wood-chip mulch abounds.

double end casing would get about 5-6 g's a cake, u could usually flush them 3-4 times each.
