Spore cap ( when to pick)

Hey folks...first post here *woo-ho*

I have several batches using regular BRF cakes under my belt. At this point I'm ready to try and collect some spores to make my own prints and such. I have read the FAQ regarding when to pick a mushroom for such a purpose.

"The right time is once the cap has opened and begins to throw spores, visible as purple deposit on and under the cap, for instance on the stem or on the veil or on the surface of the cake respective casing."

My question is this: How obvious is this and about how much time is needed after a cap opens before I should start to really look for spore drops?

Right now I have two very nice full sized mushrooms that I left off my first flush to get spores from. They opened sometime last night so at best they have been open for 8 hours. I don't have a picture that I can post. The caps are open fairly wide but the heads are still somewhat rounded, and dont quite have that "classic mushroom shape" yet. The inside of the veil that is left on the stem is very purple but I'm not seeing much else. Any help would be great

Cut that cap as you have read now and start printing. Skippy leaves them for 24 hours they get dark

Maybe give them another day. The caps will continue to open (maybe even to the point of being a little upturned), and the sporulation is very obvious when it occurs. I'm sure you've read a thread or two about people mistaking spores for a contam. Good luck w/ the syringes :grin:

P.S. Check them tonight and, if there aren't any spores, in the morning.

Cool...thanks a lot.

Also, I assume that people go ahead and dry the cap, after making a print, for consumption? Or is ther some reason not to do so?
