Questions regarding moisture at bottom of spawn bag.
    #20617368 - 09/25/14 02:06 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I have two bags of spawn which seem to be about 100% colonized, except for one.

Everything seems up to spec except for my Koh Samui bag seems to have some excess liquid gathered at the bottom, which happens to be the only park of the bg yet to colonize completely. I have flipped the bag before hoping it would settle into the rest of the bag but it seems to stay. The bag smells normal, no sweetness too it. I was planning on casing the two strains in the same container with a divider but was wondering what everyone thoughts were on the residual moisture. the tiny amount of liquid seems to be the same color as the grains, i'm not sure if this was due to just extra moisture in the bag or if i should have any concerns on possible contam. any information would be great! worse comes to worse i will simply case them separately. thanks!

I guess there is only one way to find out! Since the one with issue still seems to have some time to colonize, ill let it do its thing for  bit longer. I had already broken up that bag when it stalled for a while, would it hurt to break it up once more to to either speed up colonization or see if it is infact bacteria?

make that 100% sure. even with the bright flash I can say with confidence that is bacterial.

edit; shit, yeah open pic in new tab and zoom in, the whole left side is fucked. too fucked that I'd even bother with it.

large bags can be a bitch because of gravity and moisture. what was this inoc'd with?

Understood. It looks like, well, wet mycelium and grains. I gave it a thorough mix, ill just see what happens. Worse comes to worse ill just try to case it elsewhere (miles away). The other bag, being Treasure coast is basically rock hard ready to go. Another reason why I thought contamination was possible with the 'wet' bag (Koh Samui) was the slower colonizing, although they may have not met the same temperatures.

All in all, its a learning experience. I mentioned in past posts I injected the 'watery' one with multiple inoculation points opposed to one inocculation point on the other. I'll update progress as I can, thanks for the info!

Treasure coast-

Koh Samui (note the left bottom is a fold in the bag, not standing water)-

Oh, and some B+ just cause I had been taking pictures at the time:wink: -

look at the dirty water surrounding the grains in OP pic, easy to spot on the left side of the bag. that's a lot of bacteria.

first pic in update looks great, second one (the same as OP) still shows bacteria by the way the grains look.
If it wasnt so much of it you could try to spawn it but that much bacteria has never worked out for me.
casing it could still give you some fruits tho, but I would never spawn it.

what? no!, use the healthy bag as spawn! just add a thin casing layer on top of the bacterial one if you still wanna try to squeeze some fruits out of it.

just casing is large grain bag like that is a waste of good spawn IMO!

oh and dont assemble the GB, leave the gloves un-attached so you can flame your tools outside the box.
having the gloves attached will make air move around in the box when you move your arms.

SAB ftw, check my sig links and just cut some arm holes!

That bag is full of bacteria

The bacteria is some form of Bacillus. My guess is Bacillus subtilis. It spreads quickly. Toss the bag, you can not salvage it.

If you used the same syringe for all bags and that single one has it, then you can conclude it was from sterilization procedure.

It has happened to me a few times.
