Factorio. Infinitely better than Minecraft. Check it nerds. 1

Factorio is a basebuilding game that combines a strong engineering bent with all the fun crafting aspects of Minecraft with an (imo) far superior set of visuals. You're the sole survivor of a crash landing on a hostile alien planet from a advance colonist ship. The goal is to build an infrastructure to support a future colony when the rest of your race come later. It's still in its alpha stage but for an alpha it's got more content and is far more polished than 95% of the finished product indie games I've played in the past as well as being far superior to all the other games in the same genre.
Edit: Factorio finally had its steam release and its reviews are frankly obscene. Out of 2,327 4,188 steam reviews only 13 31 of them have been negative.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/69327240/base.jpg Heres an (enormous 30MB) snapshot of an advanced players base...unfortunately my base is nowhere near this good....yet.
The devs have a free demo of the game that you can download from their site as well so you can try before you buy. They restrict the tech you can access to the fairly basic stuff but it's still far more than most devs offer these days. I downloaded the demo, played it for an hour or two and then immediately bought the alpha. Since buying it on Sunday I've sunk a solid 20 hours into it at least.
Multiplayer hasn't been implemented quite yet...but it'll be incorporated in the future Multiplayer has been implemented. It's not perfect but it's functional and steadily getting better.

Some of the people that have been playing Factorio for a long time now have disgustingly complex bases

for Factorio. Sweet game definitely better than minecraft. Been playing it on and off for like 12 or 18 months now, really like it a lot. Maybe I'm the only lazy one, but I always get logistic bots researched as fast as possible so I can keep my base super messy and not feel bad.

After fucking around with 4-5 different factories to learn the basics.. seeing my design was super inefficient for the long haul and then starting all over multiple times... I finally got the hang of things and started a halfway decent base in a custom map I made/edited I can't take credit for the setups as I basically copied most of them from reddit or other places.. but it's pretty sweet so far.
Center is my mass of labs with green, red and blue potions all totally automated. At the bottom is my massive oil processing plant (it goes even further down) On top left I'm starting a red microchip > purple microchip > whatever farm

This is just a chunk of my base.. not pictured is most of the drills, my MASSIVE smelting farm.. all my power and turret setups, walls and whatnot.. I made a HUUUUGE area to build my base for massive expansion.
Game is fun as fuck.
Designs taken from here: Automated Tier 3 Lab setup - http://i.imgur.com/Z2t1zGI.png
Oil Processing Facility - http://i.imgur.com/1U4HKay.png With key and guidelines - http://i.imgur.com/XgHmr4N.png
microchip factory I roughly based off the center of this - https://forums.factorio.com/download/file.php?id=1237&sid=2228eec13105e509daa06b1efdd28794

and your accurate title!
do you look up game stuff, like across the board, with game love, too?
i fucking had this bookmarked from awhile ago (not more than a year ago, though lol), and it amazed me, purely from an aesthetic perspective. i mean, it was all there...complex...unique...yet simple in concept. part programming game/part resources game/part city-building.
i love games like that. sadly, they are ones i am not particularly going to get into most of the time. =(
but i might end up trying this one. oh boy. i like strategy game type stuff -- but boy, do i suck at it. not learned enough...i remember Command and Conquer and Starcraft/Warcraft skirmishes, before i had internet, and that's it. flatulent, almost, if, that is, those weren't completely classic. but i digress, i am getting off topic. this is but barely a strategy game.... =p sorry for the ramble. video games are like cool.

Dunno sincerely, I have a nice PC but I havent tried on it yet.
I read about some other ppl having issues with great gaming pcs too but I guess it's a small percentage and it's because of bugs
The graphic isnt nothing to be afraid of, maybe it's just an optimization issue. You also need to understand that bases get very huge working at 1 operation or more for second multiplied for thousands of devices. Add yourself and monsters and there ya go
In addiction most of the time ppl speaking of lag with good gaming configurations lists of a series of mods that are badly optimized or very heavy on the CPU or whatever
I'm a little upset because I was doin well on my campaign and then I have this mission which require strong player's fight and I'm not able to carry through: I'll see if I can get my save data on my PC and fix it with less lag

The campaign kinda sucks, but I've spent (~4x) more time playing Factorio freeplay than Fallout 4, and I got them at roughly the same time.
Edit: That's a lie. I've spent closer to 40x more time playing Factorio...

I feel like the others kind of game I would like to play but know that I wouldnt. If I was 14 again with all the time in the world I'd go for it but these days I tend to choose games like hitman that one can drop in and out of. Am mulling planet coaster but know I wont have the time for that too, and never even started Xcom 2 (a great game) for the same reasons!
One thing about factorio? How is the difficulty? I heard its too easy once you know what you are doing or something is that right?

I got insanely addicted to it for a couple weeks and then stopped playing it completely and have been consumed with other games. I'll probably pick it up again at some point when I get the itch. It's an awesome game though for sure. It's not insanely difficult but it does have a little bit of a learning curve to it and learning all the functions and how to be efficient and whatnot. It's a choose-your-own-adventure kinda game and you can nerd out hardcore on building crazy intricate machines so for that it's awesome.

It eats you for the first few hours, but you get the mechanics fairly quick. Took me one (terrible) factory to figure out how to do things, and I technically "beat" the game after about 80-90 hours total spread between two factories.
Then, I decided I could do it better, since my purple circuits were slow. Then my green. Then I wasn't making mines fast enough...
Since then, I've been dropping in and out of Factorio for an hour or two at a time. At this point, I've probably sunk over 1000 hours total into this game over the last while, and I'm usually working on some kind of project factory. Maybe I'm putting together a digital readout that shows me my resource amounts, saving me a mouseover. Maybe I'm building a factory which relies on one central circulatory system of belts, where all items are carried everywhere, and buffers are placed to regulate the amounts. Maybe I'm just expanding a train depot to fit an additional three cargo trains full of ore.
Once you've got a factory up and producing the basics, its pretty much an infinite map covered in infinite resources and infinite aliens coming to eat your effectively infinite walls and infinite turrets. Do something fun with it.
It's a bit like minecraft, except the idea is to only do something by hand once or twice, and then build a robot to do it for you as long as you feed it ore. Which your miners mine, and you figure out how to transport. Takes about 140k iron plates and 110k copper plates minimum to launch the rocket, you don't wanna do that by hand.

Yeah I already launched the rocket a couple times.. going from a single dude hitting with a pick to a FULLY automated factory that produces everything and directs it to the right places.. so awesome.
I created my first factory, got about 6 hours in, saw it was incredibly inefficient.. started a new one. I did that about 6 or 7 times until I was happy with my factory and went to the end game. I'm just OCD like that, I'd rather not spend the time to "fix" a big factory, sometimes easier to start from scratch. I'd find some big flaw in my system.. and decide it had to be better. That's what drove me.. just creating a more and more and more efficient factory and learning how to make it the best it can be.
Anyway game is surely like crack if you are into that sort of thing. I couldn't put it down for a few weeks when I first got it.

Agreed. I've lost sleep over this game. I wake up thinking "better unload the wood and iron ore in my pockets" then remind myself, as I wake up, that I'm naked.
I'm forcing myself not to play tonight. I need my sleep. Fuck, it's SO addictive.

Factorio timeline:
9pm: Eh, long day, might as well check it out for an hour or two before bed, only 20$. 9:30: Wow, this is really cool. 12am: I have to automate this one last thing really quick. 4am: Okay, so, how do I fit this belt here to get things from here to there? 6am: Oh, shit, it's my alarm 7am: Come on, lemme finish building this defensive wall before the biters attack... 8:15am: Fuck, I'm late for work. 10am: *snoring on desk*

Yeah, that's been me this entire week. I don't get why I loose all sense of control on it. It's worse than any drug I've taken.
But I've finally won. Now I don't have to touch it again.

Also, I touched the game again. But this time, loads, loads, loads more electronics being made, and loads more space so I can properly space out and upgrade my production lines.
I'm forcing myself not to play it tonight as I have work tomorrow morning and all I can hear in my head is the intro song. It even sounds like the creepy music they use in drug awareness films

Factorio has got me doing maths it's that bad. For example, electronic circuits.
Need 1 iron plate and 3 copper cable each. Which means that for my 10 assemblers making the circuits, I should have 15 making copper cable. I didn't, and I was running rather inefficent. Since then, I've been looking up guides.

Oh right, got it. Makes sense.

Let's see...I can post a couple of my setups as ideas for future development.
Here is my standard tessellating oil and oil cracking setups: Oil template, leaves one space between refineries:

Cracking can be modified, output pipes can be replaced by belts to make sulfur considering water is already accessible. Can be used for plastic or fuel in a pinch, or if you're trying to have a flexible production area, but the water pipes eat up an extra space:

Finally, Here is my very endgame furnace setup (as evidenced by P3/S3 cards everywhere), this is what I try to build towards, and this build style is somewhat evident in even my early furnace setups. Once you get the S3 cards going, this takes off. Haven't done production calculations yet, but 12 in a row seems to fill a blue belt ~75%. If you go S3 all around, 12-14 reliably fills a belt. I have a habit of playing very low resource, very high alien RSO maps, so I make production modules everywhere a priority. That extra 40% bonus really helps out when you just built 3000 tiles of tracks to a new iron patch, spent three stacks of shotgun shells and destroyer capsules each, and had the supply train drop off 200 lasers in addition to the 40-50 it replaces every run, all for 600-800k ore.

I've also been playing around with an idea floated on the forums by Gertibrumm, of a circulatory factory. It seems fairly inefficient for high volume production, but I really like it for high input, low output goods. Stuff like buildings, engines, that sort of thing. Everything is constantly circulated on a loop everywhere, so making a new thing is a easy as putting down a factory and hooking it up to the circuit system. It's somewhat belt-heavy, and a bit daunting to set up. Resist the urge to put ore on the belt and have smelters in odd places. It is nearly impossible to manage the required throughput without blue belts, and very well may be with blue belts.

I mean, it looks cool, but I can't stand his voice, I know, that's petty, but eh.
I get some people like to make things compact but I find it a nightmare to get around, I like my stuff spaced out.

Nice and spaced out, using underground pipes as the spacers between petrol, light and heavy, in the future I may have them even more spaced out, with even more oil refineries as I found 8 wasn't enough (I was shipping in oil from 3 other sites via train as well, the assemblers that were draining the oil barrels got stuck as there was too much crude in my main base) And maybe more chem plants turning light oil into solid fuel, that robots (lol, I know, how inefficient) would transport to fuel chests for the trains.

Chakanooga said: Thats the one thing I feared, the lag. It's almost like every game nowadays you need these extreme gamer pcs to play anything, let alone perform well.
Right, I decided to do a test. I played it at work, turns out all my saves are uploaded to steam, so I loaded up my last base, which is pretty massive, has 3 seperate train networks, thousands of drones going about, nearly a thousand assemblers, not to mention the hundreds of smelters and other refiners to keep them happy.
It worked and it wasn't slow at all. I told the logistics drones to give me a bunch of stuff (whilst auto trashing it, so they were zooming back and fourth from me to the chests) and it just didn't slow down.
The work PC is not a nuclear powered gaming PC. I know this because I built it. It has an AMD 5350 APU in it which is now £42 but when I bought it, it was £36. And 4gb of PC3-12800 (800 MHz) crucial cheapy DDR3 ram. It does have an SSD but all that affects is load times.
This PC is amazing, it cost less than £200 and for such a cheap, low power chip (it just has a passive heatsink on it, even during summer it didn't get more than 37 degrees Celsius, human body temperature) it's so capable. More than enough for email, although I suspect in 5-10 years time facebook won't load on it anymore, and yeah, facey and other social media is important for business now, we use youtube for instructional videos.
I did see that was from 8 months ago so it could be that there's been some good optimisation, but seriously, this game runs good on a budget processor.

I build production blocks with walking spaces in between. Spacing things out worked well, up till I ran into the same issue you have right now: not enough oil. It's not like I'm ever going to need to walk into the middle of my oil production when I've got it blueprinted down.
Edit: I guess I'll find a voice coach...

I've been so curious about this game... but the addiction potential has me legit concerned

Very fun game. It quickly displaced my time on other games. Thanks for the suggestion. It gets hard though. Trying to automate all the oil stuff and integrate it into parts for advanced research - yikes!

I've been eyeing this game since it launched, but have yet to pick it up because I know it will literally absorb my life. I've already spent a ridiculously large amount of time in both stardew valley and terraria. In fact I'm still playing stardew valley now because I find it very relaxing. I'm still playing Overwatch right now, I want to continue improving my skills for now, but eventually I'll pick up factorio

That's a cute starter base.
Here's mine. Yet to launch a rocket but I have all the components needed (technically, we all do, but those yellow lines in the middle? That's my bus) I'm using the "base in a book" blueprint. Most of this is made by robots. Those pink dots are oil patches, organised into a neat grid by the oil patches organizer mod.

Really wish I could show my first base that did launch a rocket after 40 hours of me figuring stuff out. Whilst I can load .14 factorio I get mod conflicts that crash the game, even if I have 0 mods loaded.
