Most Ideal Time to Begin Colonization
    #20621480 - 09/26/14 01:22 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hello again, I'm just wondering what the best time in the year it would be to begin the growing process. Would it be ideal to begin colonizing during the fall? Theoretically speaking, if I were to grow B+ cubes without any major heat source during the fall, what are the chances of success? I live in a northern climate, it's not extremely cold during the day but can get pretty nasty by night, and forget about winter. If I were to grow (which I'm not), would it be worth the risk to colonize now or would it be better to wait until winter passes over?

If you've got a small or even medium-sized room it's actually incredibly easy to maintain a pretty consistent temperature with a space heater. I used to do my grows in a basement with that room being the only one done (which means very little insulation, mostly concrete down there, etc.), and I just bought a space heater which kept the whole room where I needed it.

Even if it does get below 70 you'll still see progress at about 80%-90% of regular pace, which turns out to only be like 3-6 days longer between steps in the growing process. Plus, in my experience, slower temps later in the growing stage (colonizing bulk substrate, fruiting) producers bigger, thicker fruits.

If you do decide you're going to get a space heater go for one that has an oscillating feature, uses a fan, and has a digital temperature control. You can usually find really good ones for about $70-$80 in stores or cheaper on Amazon. The oscillation obviously helps move warm air around evenly, the fan helps push it out everywhere compared to a quartz or oil-filled one, and the digital temp control helps for obvious reasons. Plus, even if you don't plan on growing every winter, at least now you have a pretty good space heater for when your room gets cold as shit at night.
