Rustspore in the midst?

So, as I was getting ready for my "GREAT Oak Ridge Giveaway", which will be available at the Marketplace this coming Monday. ( <---Shameless Promotion! Hee, Hee). I came across a Rust colored print! Out of 130 prints.... 3 came out rust colored. I've been working with Oak Ridge since Jeetered handed out the original prints. I've never had them do this. I "re-acquired" a print, which was one that I had traded with Naum a long time ago and it was still in the original packaging that I sent to him. So, My question is..... Do I start growing out the rust colored print and see if I can get it to the point that it produces the rust colored spores? AND...... If so, should it remain "Oak Ridge"? Should it be given a BASTARDIZED name like "Rusty Oak", LOL! Afterall, It's JUST a cubensis! Any thoughts, comments or ideas? Here's the Pic.

A shame you don't have the culture that produced the rust spores. To grow out the spores and by luck happen upon that gene again.......well good luck lol.

The brown spores are from a genetic mutation, I've never seen an environmental effect on spore color. Usually (always?) lack of full spore color is a recessive trait so pure brown spores (assuming no chimerism, i.e. mix of brown and black spores) should also produce mushrooms with brown spores. There is no reason you can't grow out the brown spores and call this your own strain if it breeds true.
The issue you have with seeing the same/similar brown spores in different trays suggests a single point mutation propagating through your different grows via anastomosis from airborne spores generated by an original mutation. This commonly happens when several strains are fruited in the same chamber but isn't always obvious unless there is a clear mutant.
thats what i got from workman when my rust spores showed up

Perfect! It' will be my next project. I'll post pics as I go through it. "RUSTY OAK" It has a good "ring" to it. I wonder if Workman would do an analysis of a print.

Amazing! Funny that the Chimerism was mentioned. There was ONE print that had that trait! I had never seen that before either. I'll take a picture and post it in a minute as an exhibit, (example) to that trait.

Here is the print that exhibited both dark and rust colored spores in the same print. (Chimerism).

PW and I have been going back and forth on this issue for months on the boards. I'm firmly in the "cubes are cubes, sans mutants" camp, with anastomosis being pretty much my only point of evidence for the interchangeability of varieties, whereas he thinks there's some merit in variety. Needless to say, I find this thread fascinating.

As long as I've been doing this, this is the first time I've encountered this. You read about it, you hear about it, but never encounter it. This is yet another stage of my development as a cultivator. I feel like a kid in a candy store! This is where you document, document, and then document some more. I'm excited!
