Found a salamander!!!
    #20613135 - 09/24/14 06:35 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Was out hiking with my puppy looking for a few mushrooms and some Fagus grandifolia saplings to dig up and take home :rasta::heart:

So I lifted a rotting log to help me access a very small sapling (about 3" tall) when I found this cool little Eastern red-back salamander!! That is all.

Pictures suck cuz he was a jumpy little fuck!

Cool looking guy!  Out hiking a couple of months ago i found this salamander (about the same size as yours), no idea what type, but it looked pretty sweet.

I found a salamander, big and black with spots, curled up in a corner of my basement-- they had somehow found a way in, but there was no way they were getting back out.

Moved them outside to my garden.

Did he look like this color dragon?

I found these little fellows as tadpoles and raised them, until my turtle had a tasty dinner one night.

And that orange guy is super cool looking Bambi!

Yep, those are what I had.  I believe their common name is just 'spotted salamander'.

That's not a salamander; it's a "red eft", the juvenile form of the Eastern (or Red-Spotted) Newt.

There is also a similar looking species that can be found in most of Europe, usually called fire salamander. Here is a picture of one I found in a forest near my home, a month or two ago:

Amphibians and reptiles are so cool! Sometimes those Red Efts are all over the trails when its warm and wet out.  Its funny how the Red Eft goes from water to land then back to water.  Where others go from water to land and then just to the water to lay eggs.

The bad thing about amphibians breeding habits is that many have to cross roads to get to their breeding ponds.  A few nights a year areas next to puddles and ponds have 1,000's of animals making a dash across busy roads.  The only ponds that have reasonable populations as far as I can tell are the ones closest to wild areas with the least traffic yet they still cover the road in carcasses.  Maybe this spring I'll do a study on the mortality rate of a local species.  Set up a light and camera and count how many make it or don't.  Like a real life frogger video game.

You should get a pet salamander.
