Trouble with PE Cakes fruiting - go to casing?
    #20571931 - 09/15/14 06:20 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello all,
Long time lurker, first time poster.

Started growing in the past couple months and had success with PFC and PF Hondurans.  I decided I'd give some PE a try and things have not gone as smoothly.

These full pint cakes have sat in my fruiting chamber for two weeks with no pins/fruits, other than the myc colonizing the verm that was applied during the Dunk'n'Roll.  I read thru some posts on here and heeded advice from Hawk in another thread to get them outside 15 minutes a day in real sunlight, I'm now 3 days into that routine.

My questions:
1) How long should i keep at the 15 minutes/day real sunlight thing before throwing in the towel on these cakes and trashing them?
2) Would it be beneficial to transfer these to a casing?  I read a lot of posts about how PE is difficult to get going in Tek cakes.
3) For my fruiting chamber - Is it better to just trash the air pump/bubblers and humidifier/wand and go over to a SFGC?  I was trying to provide a bit of automation - I'm out of town for several days at a time.
4) Any other suggestions to getting these little MF'ers to fruit?

Details:
Spores: ordered from one of the trusted vendors on this site, and created some LC using a syringe.  Checked the LC on a 1/2 pint to ensure no contaminants.

Cakes - Full pint jars inoculated with PE LC mentioned above - took approx 3-4 weeks to colonize and consolidate.

Fruiting Chamber - where I suspect there may be problems...
Original setup to a Poor Man's Pod with bubbler wands under the perlite, and a mister wand and humidifier at the top of the chamber.  This setup worked great with the PFC and PFH.
Read some posts on here about PE troubles and moved over to a hybrid PMP/SGFC - drilled plenty of holes to allow for FAE, but I kept the wands and mister wand.

Temp/RH are usually right around the 75 / 97.5-100% mark
12/12 light cycle with a CFL in the proper Kelvin range

My questions:
1) How long should i keep at the 15 minutes/day real sunlight thing before throwing in the towel on these cakes and trashing them?
2) Would it be beneficial to transfer these to a casing?  I read a lot of posts about how PE is difficult to get going in Tek cakes.

The scientist in me cringes because I'm asking about changing too many variables at once, and I feel like I dove in with a difficult to grow species/strain and advanced fruiting chamber before building up a good knowledge base here.  Who can guide me back to the enlightened path?

Thanks in advance
-DB

just get your cakes off the perlite, unhook those hoses and make sure you have the holes on all six sides and the chamber elevated, mist as needed and be patient

In my experience PE can take a really Long time to pin.

I had a tub go almost a month after I introduced fruiting before any pin!

yes with cakes i would recommend doubling up on the consolidation time at the very least

Thanks for the replies/advice!

"Doubling up on consolidation time" - you mean inside the jars, correct?  From this - I'm assuming the inside of the cakes are taking a bit longer to colonize, and that's why I'm not seeing pins/fruits at the surface?

What is your past experience with the timeline on PE?  How long to colonize your jars, how long from birthing to fruiting?

I pulled out the tubes for now, and will keep on with the 15 minutes of sunlight per day.  I'm going to stop by the hardware store today and get a new bin for a SFGC, and get that set up tonight.

Thanks again

Consolidation is giving the mycellium time to digest the really nutritious substrate it has just colonized.

Consolidation is not giving the inside more time to colonize, because if the outside of the jar is colonized, then so is the inside......it's all about digesting nutrients.

BRF cakes are almost on the verge of being too nutritious, so longer consolidation times are required.

We suggest letting cakes sit for at least a week past full colonization before birthing.

What do you mean 15 min of sunlight a day?

Use a 6500k florescent (CFL works fine) and you wont have to do that. Ambient light is fine for colonization and whatnot but ppl usually use a 12 on 12 off light cycle. Unless you have a window they can be in all day

You let them consolidate one week before birthing though?

I picked up the 15 minutes thing fr.searching thru the threads regarding trouble with PE fruiting. One of the trusted cultivators suggested it. However, I do have a timer and lamp (in the proper K range) set up on a 12/12 cycle that I have been using. I was just supplementing this with natural sunlight per the suggestion.

And yes, I allowed the jars to consolidate for at least a week after the NYC fully colonized the inside of the jar.  I guess these just need more patience...

Alrighty then. I've got my chamber fully switched over to a SGFC and got those cakes off the perlite and onto foil.

While I was moving things around I did notice that some of the PF Honduran cakes had started pinning, so conditions should be good.  The temperature is a little low (73 this morning) so I'm looking at options to make things a bit warmer.

One remaining question/concern: I live in a high/dry climate (over a mile above sea level) does anyone have recommendations on keeping things appropriately humid in the chamber?  Approximately how often do you find you need to wet your perlite down again?

73° is great for fruiting conditions might get meatier mushrooms at that i found when my room temps were in the 80° range i got a lot of hollow stems they grew fast though but hollow

Update!

A few days after switching out to a SGFC (but keeping the mister wand on the lid of the thing to account for my local humidity issues), I got some beautiful fruits.

A few cakes which I had forgotten were PF Honduran sprouted right up, too quick to pick

Then a few days later, some meaty mofo PEs started growing.

I actually ended up buying a dehydrator to handle the flushes I got.  I've picked some of the PF Honduran cakes 2-3 times and they're still growing without a 2nd dunk.

Thank you to all for your help!  I think my next adventure will be grain spawn to a monotub.

To any who follow me: STICK TO THE PF TEK WORD FOR WORD UNTIL YOU GET SOME RESPECTABLE FLUSHES!  Don't be arrogant and think you can do it better your first few times thru, these are some smart mofos on the forums - we're standing on the shoulders of giants.
