Agar cooking up funny
    #20614173 - 09/24/14 09:30 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Ive been getting specks and spots in my agar. Its clean and it works fine, but it makes it hard it looks like contams sometimes.

I use MEA pre mixed agar store bought.

I thought it was just the one time but this time I see spots before I poured

Any ideas? What could I have done different theses last two pours

Thx

Dunno. Mine does it too sometimes. It's likely undissolved or carmelized tidbits.

I get carmelized/burnt specks when I'm dissolving the agar at too high a temp or not constantly mixing it to keep it from burning on the bottom of the pan.

boil the agar mix first then PC it. Constantly stir while you do the boil part. Decant or strain through a filter.

Specks could be coming from the pot you're using

I've never done pour agar, but if it's anything like no pour, you can let all the solids separate out, decant, and then either PC it or load it into no-pour plates and PC it.

Ive never encountered this problem with the pre mix before

Last run was a no pour cause I was out of plates. I used small mason jars w easy felt lids. Worked great, but I had the specks then too but I assumed it was cause I did no pour

It works fine its just hard to pick out contams
