How to do Coir Question...

Ok i have always followed DAMION5050 on his HOW TO DO COIR TEK or MY ELEMENTARY COIR TEK.
Is there a REASON its in a 5 gal bucket, i actually tossed mine out and was wondering if i can use my tub in the same manner?
Im guessing theres a reason he uses a bucket so if so im curious nonetheless.

The bucket holds the heat better than a tub would (depending on the tote of course). I often wrap mine in a towel to keep the temp up.

Probably. Just wrap it up good to hold the heat. Or you could sterilize it in your PC

You could pasteurize your substrate inside quart jars in a big canner or stock pot, too. Still the bucket tek is very nice for straight CVG and a lot of times you can find free food grade buckets with nice lids in the receiving docks of grocery stores and shit. As a part time receiver in a store like that, I can guarantee they'll be totally cool about giving you one. Moving boxes too . I wrap mine in a big down sleeping bag

I've been using a big-ass tub for mine for a while now. I can do enough for 6 bricks at a time. Works just fine.

I was going to actually see if my PC can hold all of the required substance and act as a bucket.
Looks like it will, i don't remember the substrate getting TO MUCH more expanded. Hope it works anyways, lol.

The original bucket tek used a PC to hold the coir. Then damian took it used a bucket instead.

Buckets are cheap so you can do multiple preps at once.
If only making enough for one mono, buckets and pots work better than just dumping it all in the tub because the extra volume of air plus the mass of CVG being spread out makes the CVG cool faster.
If making multiple bricks, then the tub will hold the heat better.
I like using a big canning pot because it's short and fat and easier to mix by hand.
If I'm doing multiple runs, I use buckets in buckets and mix using a plaster mixer attachment on my cordless drill.
I'm thinking of using spray foam sandwiched between two buckets.
You can't really hardly mess up CVG. Just get it wet and hot for at least an hour so break it down a little so the mycelium will colonize it faster.

I just add the entire brick to the monotub with the verm and measure out the apropriate amount of water to bring both the coir/vermiculite to feild capacity, boil it up and dump it in, let cool, add spawn.

Ah. You guys and your coir. Hpoo is where it's at. I can prep enough poo for 8 tubs in a day and still work a full day. Get it together and realize hpoo is gold in comparison and doesn't take that much more time than bucketed coir

I'd love to use hpoo, but there aren't many horses around me. Collecting it is a bitch too.

If I had a source of horse manure within the city I would use it ALL of the time Azur, you're not lieing about it, I can vouch for that.

I'm very lucky my mom has horses. She does live 5 hours from me, but i take my children to visit her for the weekend and get a free mini vacation, minus gas. I take a bunch of tubs and find scores of poo that's been heavily rained on so gathering is easy and no grinding necessary.

Just a pain to come across in the city without having to field a lot of questions. Even then u gotta drive 25 min to an hour where I can get some coir from the pet store and be home in 10 min. I'm loving diverse substrates right now, poo, straw, worm castings are fun and I love how the sub looks with em. But lets just say a person is just looking to test something or just needs a guaranteed print or has a lot of sub to prep and little time, then coir is great.
Hpoo is boss but I have had a lot of success with coir. I will say that for best results good culturing practices are important but once you have those its easy to just roll with it.
Coir is also great to buff up subs for woodlovers. My reishi love it as do enoki. I grew oysters on straight coir. Its easy to obtain, store and prep, and is quite versatile.
I am going to go back to sterilizing my coir. Without question I get stronger, faster colonization and it seems yields are improved with sterilized coir. You should try it azur, you might be surprised

Hydrate load in jars and PC for an hour usually does the trick. It should be dark when it comes out almost black. Both tubs in my sig were sterilized coir verm cased with sterilized coir verm.
