    #20601871 - 09/22/14 04:05 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all
so I got sum filter bags and want to bulk substrate in them. inoculate after pasteurizing with sum spawn. Colonize it in the bag and fruit it when done
is that correct?
And what is a good substrate to use. I have straw, sawdust, bran, rye flour and gypsum can I mix it all together and use that as substrate its for cubes

If your using grains or flour in the mix it will need to be sterilized and you will need to have grains or flour in the mix.

Sawdust is unnecessary. And if you pc straw, your bags will go green!

If you are gonna knock it up with grain.
I suggest you skip the straw till you've got a bit more experience

I got the impression OP was planning to inoculate the bags with a syringe, which is why I suggested he needed grains or flour in the mix. Straw would be fine in that instance too.

Even if its colonized in a filter patch bag? Just curious, I have never tried myself but it was something I was planning to try in the future. I figure if it is fully colonized in sterile filter patch bags then there should be no contam risk. Please elaborate.

Straw needs to be pasteurized. Sterilizing straw is guarantee failure.

Spawning in open air sure.  What's the problem with it being sterilized within a filter patch bag and inoculating it with grain spawn in a SAB or in front.of a hood?

The point of pasteurizing bulk poo or straw is to keep beneficial bacteria around to prevent contams from gaining a foothold before it can be colonized (especially if spawning in open air).  In a sealed bag with a filter, it wouldn't be any different than anything else you put in a jar or bag through a PC run (grains etc).  As long a sterile technique is used, there shouldn't be any more chance of a contam (at least in theory).  Sounds like an experiment waiting to happen.  Who knows maybe the heat of the PC run will break down the straw even more so than a pasteurization run, aiding in the mycelium's ability to digest it quicker.
