First Time Grower Taking on Panaeolus Cyanescens
    #20603314 - 09/22/14 08:23 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Thanks for viewing my post.

I have a quick question regarding the mycelium of Pan Cyans on agar and how its supposed to look.

I made up a few jars of MDA and dropped the spores in. I have been keeping the temps at 80 degrees Fahrenheit and I am wondering if the growth I am seeing is actually Pan Cyan mycelium or some kind of contaminant. The growth looks to me like cotton balls basically. It's very white, not grey.

Here is a photo of one of my jars, I am wondering if someone can tell me if everything is going good or if I have a contaminant. I apologize about the quality but I was trying to snap a quick photo in my still air box.

Any opinions would be very greatly appreciated.

The growths in my jars are very white.

I only inoculated them 4 days ago so it seem like very quick growth so I am hoping its not cobweb.

I've seen people say that MDA is no different then MEA in terms of speed but in my case the growth is definitely more vigorous on MDA then MEA. I tried using both.

Do you mean transferring it to the grain or to another Agar dish? I thought it was to early to transfer it to the grain at this point.

Thanks a lot for the response. I have some pre-poured dishes arriving in two days, with that being said should I do the transfer as soon as possible or would it be acceptable to wait for the pre-poured dishes to arrive?

That looks like you should transfer it ASAP.  I'd do it now, if you can, and then again to a pre-poured dish one day and a half after it recovers.

I just mixed some more MDA and I have jars in the pressure cooker now. For the transfer I would just take a small section section of the mycelium from each jar and transfer it to another correct?

And what exactly is the purpose of doing the repetitive transfers. I was under the impression that I just needed to wait until the mycelium colonized the jar, then inoculating the grain jars with sections of the canonized agar.

Yup.  Making sure you flame before each transfer.

Thanks for the reply, would you mind elaborating on why all the transfers are necessary?

There two main reasons that I can think of.  One is that by doing quick transfers you can isolate away from any contaminants that recover more slowly than Psilocybe but which grow faster, which includes many molds.  Another is that you want to somewhat limit the genetics to reduce intraspecific competition, and transferring is the best way to do that.

How exactly is intraspecific competition possible when using spores from a single genotype?

Edit : I think I may have found the answer here http://mushplanet.com/cultivation_manual/multispore-and-single-strains.html

Basically because there are many hundreds of individuals any time you do MS, and they're all competing to various degrees.

Pan Cyan mycelium starts out sortof wispy looking... kindof halfway between cobweb and cubensis... and it thickens up over time. That doesn't look like pan mycelium to me, but I could be wrong. It looks like fresh fuzzy cubensis mycelium...

spore swipe:

3rd plate, 2nd transfer from spore

in general i'd definitely say it lacks the rhizomorphs cubensis is known for.
