Should I use verm and BRF? I read WBS or rye is better. What do you guys think is best for a noob with 12 half pint jars?

BRF and verm are for cakes and rye/wbs is for spawn - usually in quart jars. With the half pints you want the cakes!

I haven't tried using rye or WBS flour. I say do four of each and let us know!

For your first try I would do the PF Tek. Follow it exactly and you should see mushrooms. Then if you want bulk next time around try spawn (rye/wbs/popcorn). Some people never leave PF Tek!

You are indeed correct. I'll just go with the standard procedure.

it's hard for me to find BRF where I live so I've started taking regular brown rice from the store and boiling the shit out of it until the rice has expanded into a fluffy goo and then adding vermiculite to that. I don't have any exact ratios to use for that method since I just adjust it by adding more verm or water until it feels right to me.
boiling whole rice into goo seems to really release the nutrients in the rice and make them more freely available to the mycelium than with BRF.
I also will add small amounts of organic wheat flour, cottonseed meal, spent coffee grounds, gypsum, ground flax seed. There's all kinds of things you can throw in the mix that the mushrooms will love. In general, the more you can add to the nutritional diversity without over concentrating the nutritional density, the better.

i've done this with wbs once with a whole 20 lb bag, it was shit grain that was super dirty/busted grains so i did exactly what you described, no measuring or anythign just adddverm till it felt right

This prompts me to mention something I made a thread about a while back but didn't really keep updated very well.
Since my recent move, it's hard to find a lot of materials for this hobby that were easily available where I moved from. One of those things being coco coir.
One day I decided to go ahead a buy a bag of regular potting soil from the Dollar General store down the road. It was just plain soil with no additives or fertilizers. I mixed it with verm and hydrated the mixture and then sterilized it and then spawned a few cakes to it at a 1:1 ratio. so all my half pint cakes were mixed with a half pint of soil/verm to make some 1 pint mini bulk sub cakes.
I was actually a bit surprised to see them colonize quite fast and go on to produce just as well or perhaps better than the coir substrates I've used before. And at $1.99 per cubic foot, that's pretty feakin awesome! Super cheap, super available and super easy!
I pretty much never fruit cakes directly anymore because of this. All my cakes get spawned into soil substrate blocks now lol

If it's hard for you to find brf just buy Brown rice and pulverize into powder.
