Suitable Bulk Substrate?

Yesterday I was perusing my local hardware store looking for manure to use as a bulk substrate for some nice mushies . All I could find was this compost and steer manure blend: Link
Is this suitable for a bulk substrate or should I maybe look into something else like coir?

Coir is easier and pretty much foolproof. Manure will need proper pasteurization and will not be as forgiving as coir. As for steer manure you will probably want to mix it with coir anyway (or straw) and verm due to its muddy texture. Coir will help get that nice fluffy texture that helps with colonization.

Alright, sounds good. I'll just be safe and use coir as my bulk growth experience is limited.
Thanks

I just used cow manure for the first time. I really wish I had not been out of coir because that shit got muddy as hell.

I use this from lowes. it's only about 20 percent of my sub but it works wonders. when I grow envys's every one of them has a poo pellet in the base of the stem. I used to break up the pellet's, these days I just mix them in with my bulk straw mix. If you use poo and your sub seems muddy it's too wet. poo is tougher to master but worth it in the long run. good luck

but oh yes, coir is in my mix to.
oh yeah. the poo is 3 bucks for 40 pounds so you can guess why I stopped gathering horse poo.

I never had a problem with hors poo just this cow shit and I really don't think it was too wet. It's just so sticky compared to nice fluffy coir.

Yo muda, check out sarahs journal. She, cron, and i had a discussion on poo earlier. I posted an interesting link. I'll try to qoute myself. ...

Beef cattle don't get all the awesome feed dairy cows get. Here's an elementary, but interesting article on poo http://www.plantea.com/manure.htm

Maybe so, but dairy cows get stuffed with grain their whole lives. My opinion is dairy cpoo #1. Hpoo or straw #2. Coir #3. Cpoo#4 Remember, i grew up on a dairy farm with horses and a few beef cattle. I know poo

That all makes a lot of sense. I'm actually pretty happy with supplemented coir. I generally just use manure for my pans.

Might have to try that, I have plenty of dogfood. Just grind it up?

yup. I haven't had any fruits of it yet but the subs I added it to have colonised so thick and fast. Just don't use to much or things can get a bit to sticky. I have been using it for about 15 to 20% of my substrate.

I am no expert I think coco coir should be the best substrate . It is easy to handle and does not create a mess besides being relatively contam resistant. If you want you can use pasteurized straw without the manure . Hope it helps
