Grain preparation

I found out today that I haven't been properly preparing my rye berries (not rinsing them enough times to clean them and simmering them instead of boiling them). Could this incorrect preparation be what has been creating contaminants for me?

I agree. I never rinse my grain. Any dirt or foriegn objects in your grain will be just as sterile once its gone through the PC.

I don't trust the way cheap WBS is processed. I'm more worried about leaching heavy metals and shitty chemical fertilizer trace from mine. I literally deal with bulk grains for a living though so maybe I've gone a little off the deep end since I do sourcing and purchasing of that stuff wholesale from 4 different distributors.

The main problem with dirty grain is sticking and you may have issues shaking and/or G2G later. Contams come from insufficiant sterilization, poor filter/filter fail, dirty inoculate and poor inoculation procedure.

So what leaches out into the water that turns it red with WBS? Besides of course the pigment from the milo. It smells fucking terrible as well. I just figured it was loaded with pesticides and chemicals since FDA regulations don't apply to WBS. I'm sure the crops got sprayed with all kinds of nasty shit while the seeds were forming. I don't know if it would affect the end product but I consider it my due diligence to make my spawn as clean as possible. Probably just a product of working in the health foods industry.

OP if you have a presto pc then make sure to allow steam to vent for a bit (around 5min) before putting the weight on. If you immediately put the weight on then the temp inside isn't going to be 245f at 15psi until like 40 minutes in. just fyi since a lot of people don't seem to know

Unrinsed grains doesn't cause contamination. Simmering instead of boiling doesn't cause contamination either.
It's either your inoculation, inoculation technique, or filters if you're getting contams in your jars.
However, if you're jars are overly wet, they can be more susceptible to contaminants introduced after PCing or not killed during PCing.

Op I told you in an earlier thread your culprit was most likely a dirty syringe
I never said your grain prep had anything to do with contams. I just said it sounded like you were over complicating it
There are tons of ways to prep grain. Its pretty forgiving
