A few questions about growkits
    #20600337 - 09/22/14 09:24 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Helloo people. I've just got a few questions, now i've read through this forum for quite some time, so i know most of you disapprove of buying growkits from whatever online vendors. NEVERTHELESS, this is the way I want to start out, and a few months after that probably move on to try one of your PF TEKS? so forgive me please, and if i do not know the right terms. =)

As i said i've read through the forum, but there is soo many outdated posts, 10 years ago, 5 years, 2 years, etc.. I've had a hard time figuring out how much of the information i've gathered is outdated, so i would just like my answers in the ''now'' to be sure.

1, optimal light and heat for when the mush-bags are incubating?(This is with sterilized rye and whatever spores i might buy)
If i have read correctly, it would be around 70-80F or 20-25C?
And just normal 12/12 day and night light cycle standing somewhere away from direct light?

2. After the few weeks and the cultivation box is done(with perlite, vermiculite and mycelium); fill it with water and close the lid, let it stand for 12 hours. Is this still correct, and is heat/light a factor at that point?

3. When i've put the cultivation box in these plastic bags they use as growroom; Bit of water in the bottom of the plastic bag, or mist the sides of the plastic bag everyday or?
And for these kits, should i have some kind of fan running for water evaporation? As i've seen some posts with pictures of their shrooms nearly being covered in water drops. Is that what a cup of water in the bottom of the plastic bag would prevent?

That's all, I feel myself that i am overthinking it, but i would just like to be 100% sure that i am doing it right. If i am successful, i will probably come back with questions regarding setting up and what to buy for my own grow from the bottom. =D

Thanks again to whomever might give the time and energy to read and answer my puny questions

1; yes, or in other words "incubation" isnt needed just put the grain jars on a shelf.

2: No. that sounds like a kit with mycel in it already. perlite has no place in a substrate.
did you buy pre-sterilized grain jars or ready boxes with mycel?

3: build a SGFC and ditch the choke bag! www.mushroomvideos.com vid 3 shows the making of one in video.
Principles of the SGFC where to put it/how to use it.

WHen you find out just how many $$ you've wasted on pre-made poorly functioning stuff checkout www.mushroomvideos.com for pf-tek
and read our newest TC's The Basics

follow links in peoples signatures, see how FrankHorrigan Spitballjedi and TranscendingLife does monotubs
Evilmushroom666 magash and shea25 has good posts on pf-tek

It is plastic bags with pre-sterilized rye, with a special kind of rubber patch to inject spores through, then when mycelium is everywhere, perlite in bottom of a plastic box, mycelium on top of that, and over that, moist vermiculite. Acording to the sites manual. Which is why i am here to make sure it is not outdated or anything

Will check out that link now

If you live in Canada you can buy fully colonized jars of myclium spawn.

These are what I used when I got started. Use these to either spawn to bulk (coir/verm/gypsum works well for a first time) or do G2G transfers. These jars don't cost as much as a full blown grow kit and take some of the riskier sterile work out of it.

The best advise I can give is to read read read. Pick out a method you think will work for you and them read about some more. As stated above Franks techniques are popular and are successful.

Good luck

aah, well: your pre-sterilized rye bag has about a 50/50 shot of colonizing according to the post history here.
pre-made anything usually sucks because those that make them dont care as much as you do about the end result.

throw the instructions away, if you get a bag of rye grains completely colonized
dont waste it by making a copy of those fucked up kits.

mix them grains evenly with coir+verm in a monotub for best results!

adding a thin casing layer on top is optional.

cased grains doesnt perform as well as grains evenly mixed with substrate.
perlite has no use in the monotub or in that shoe box thing you was thinking of making.
perlite is for the bottom of a SGFC which is made for trays or pf-cakes.

dont mix up tek's! just read the monotub stuff by FH, SBJ and TL!
Frank has an easy 12 step program to mushrooms in a monotub,
I do it like the steps in my signature shows!

I hate when I see a post with someone saying they are growing grow kit reguardless. It is a massive waste of money and most of what you said there is incorrect.

It's hard to grow without knowing what to do and why your doing it which is why kits suck when they have terrible directions or old dried out substrate.

Anyway if you must buy a kit which you say has sterilized rye bags you would inoculate your rye with your spores and let it colonize at room temp in ambient light.

Once it's colonized you should use the grains to inoculate a bulk substrate by you'll need to do some readig on that. If you just wanna use the grains you will lay them down in  a Tupperware or tray and cover with a casing layer of coir/vermiculite or peat moss and vermiculite or buy jiffy mix and use that. Do not use a wet layer of perlite in the bottom of tray

Ah yeah well, i read the instructions and was abit like.. Meh, can this really be it? So i came here for further instructions

''The perfect growing conditions are created by humid layers of vermiculite and perlite''
Quoted from manual. The perlite in the bottom is dry, and vermiculite on top is moist, and in the middle i am supposed to put the colonized mycelium. Then wait 1 week or so for the mycelium to break through the vermiculite.
Then i am supposed, as i said; fill it with water, put lid on and store it for 12 hours, and let the water out, take lid off and into plastic bag grow room :p

And as i said, i bought this kit just to satisfy my curiosity enough, to make a larger and my own grow from the bottom. After i've seen how this works atleast.

welcome to the Shroomery  . all your further instructions can be found here for sure. just use the search function. if you dont understand something. or you think you figured it all out. start a log, and post exactly what your doing and why. and people will help you and verify the information youve obtained

i bought one of those bags from somewhere. actually its the one i used in my signature. but if i made it myself, which i kno how now lol. it would have been a lot quicker colonizing im sure of it. not to mention, iv figured out smaller jars are the way to go. quicker colonization time  i use 1/2 pints with a modified lid now.

edit:  i also keep a "Science Journal", right next to my FC for easy reference. especially since i took the notes :crazy2:

Heh well, as i keep reading things make more sense, just read through all of this persons grow And i have quite a few of those kind of plastic boxes, just not perlite, or any of those things yet. Might go out looking for supplies this week to build up a chamber like that, but for now just waiting for that growkit.

Would this kind of plastic box work for a SGFC setup? The sides of it is very little clear/transparent. The box lid is however, very clear..

Could this box work for the kind of setup, in your link? Or does it need to be completely transparent

i dont think transparency does anything except light. but if your not using window light or something i dont see an issue. reason most go transparent is so they can see easily into the chamber.

as long as it has 1/4'' holes  2'' apart on all 6 sides in a grid pattern. it should work perfect.  also note, it has to be big enough to fit about 3.5''-4'' of perlite, trays or cakes, and another 5-10'' for shrooms development

how big are your grain bags? and how many do you have? with 2-3 qts of grain you could do a mini mono tub with a 27qt tub. no perlite needed just look up the bucket tek and do a half recipe. you will have your bulk substrate and grains mixed together in this tub with a few holes in it (search frank horrigans dialing in monotub like a boss) and that will provide your humidity.

if you have 5-6ts worth of grain you cn do a standard 66qt mono tub with the whole recipe from the bucket tek. it is very easy to follow and you just need some compressed coconut fiber (coir its often called) you get a brick at the petsmart for like 2-3$ (ecoearth) and some vermiculite which is $6 for an 8qt bag usually. and a bucket with a lid and some boiling water.

you will increase your yield drastically from just casing your grains (covering them with vermiculite or any other casing material)

i know theres so much new information to proccess. there are mny ways to do this but for a new grower this is the easiest nd best way to make use of your grains

No, i've been reading all day and last night about CGFC and that mono tub setup, i'm not sure which is easier yet, though ^^

Oh and i've ordered two small kits with 425 g sterilized rye each.. So i dont know.

Jesus that's like taking a bus to figure out if you like driving. Please do not base your impression of the hobby by your experience with some pre made bullshit. If you actually did some reading, you would see just how many people get kits that contam on them. If you grow a huge pile of mold and get all disappointed, just know that's not the way I feel when I harvest a tub full of mushies that I grew myself.

Alright! So i've decided to just make a small SGFC setup with a plastic box i had, instead of whatever plastic bag they provide.. I have not gotten my kits yet, so i'll head out tommorow and buy a bag of perlite. anything specific i need to know when i go looking for it? Is it supposed to be small fine pieces or big chunks or something? As far as i can read on the SGFC guide i am using, there is also supposed to be holes in the bottom of the box, i am thinking about the perlite falling out of the holes there, and the bottom part of the sides for that matter, if too small pieces?

That's all i've got for now. Whenever i make some progress with that, i'll probably start shopping for parts for that monotub guide by SpitballJedi! looks pretty interesting, and not too difficult for the simple minded..

i dont think hes bought anything yet.

friis if you havent bought a kit yet and you have a tub to make a sgfc why not just try making your own cakes? 12 half pint jars $10, brown rice flour (whole brown rice if you have a coffee grinder to make flour yourself) a few bucks. 8qt verm $6 and your perlite 8qt also $6 and a pot with a lid for sterilizing. add that up and compare to kits you find. and keep in mine your jars will be better than theirs cause they are fresh and you know exactly whats in them

or did  you just mean you havent gotten your kit in the mail yet?

I have not gotten it in the mail yet, probably will come this week. While that is just sitting in whatever sgfc i can come up with tommorow, i will be reading more, and taking notes on what i need to buy for that monotub. and spacechilddo, I bought 2 kits, there are in each of them, 425g sterilised rye, vermiculite, perlite, alcohol swap, spore syringe, a plastic box for the grow, and a plastic bag that should work as a mini grow room. What i just wanted to do after reading here, was make a small sgfc, after the mycelium have grown and i've got the box of completely colonized substrate, take it out of the box, place it on foil in sgfc like in the various guides here? Instead of using that small plastic bag as grow room :frown:

aaaaah! "best" of both worlds

still throw away the instructions and forget everything it said. its just :wow:

sgfc's shouldn't be small, you need 4-5" of perlite, cakes and head space for shrooms to grow.

buy a brick of compressed coir. How much perlite is there?
could be easier to do a dub-tub or buy a small tote as a mini mono.

if you wanna do pf-cakes next just buy more perlite, if not buy a PC.

I've reconsidered the plastic box i have, it's probably too small.. I will buy a larger and clear one tommorow too. There is 400ml of perlite in each kit, so 800, and 200ml vermiculite in each, so 400. But as i said, i'll go buy a bag of perlite tommorow, i am guessing that 800ml wont be enough to cover 4-5''. So shopping list is a large clear plastic container, and a bag of perlite, for now. I guess i might even have to buy a drill for them holes.

I am new, those terms.. dub-tub?
And my previous question, is it any special kind of perlite and vermiculite i need to be looking for? I dont know if there are different kinds.

Compressed coir? That's for monotub right? I'll be trying that tek at a later point from scratch. For now just those damn kits in a sgfc.

Another question, when these guides says misting and fanning, i get that misting, but fanning? Should i just take a fan and point it down in the plastic box/sgfc for a while? :p Sounds like a silly question, but my english is not at its best and i forget words :frown:

Just fan it for 10-20 seconds with the lid. The purpose of which is to create evaporation from the surface which is a pinning trigger.

We fan for a drop in humidity, to make room in the air for evaporation to take place.

We only fan out the chamber after misting the cakes/substrate, to aid in evaporation.
