My back hurts need ideas!
    #20599306 - 09/21/14 10:56 PM (9 years, 6 months ago)

So my lower back aches like hell while and after i'm polishing cabochons. It never hurts otherwise. It's not being pinched or anything like that and it goes away after resting. I could work twice as fast if I could figure out how to keep this from happening. Should I raise my workbench up 6 inches? There must be something. Why does this only happen in front of my bench grinders? I can mine and carry buckets of rock all day and night and never feel anything.

How about using a lumbar support belt like this one?

Also, do you curve your back a lot while doing this?

I don't see a brace helping much maybe though...I am hunched over so I can see really close what i'm doing. If I raise the work up, then my arms will get tired from being that much more raised. The wheel would have to be in my face to keep me from hunching over.

If I raise the grinders any higher they will be spraying water in my face and down my neck. I guess my best bet would be strengthening my back muscles. But then I only do this specific work a few months out of the year. I am planning on doing more work in the lapidary as I get older though. I need ways to really keep my body in shape other than mining.

Don't worry about a little back pain.  The work you're doing, if you do it long enough will wear you out and you'll have real shit going on when you get to my age.  You'll have legit pain to worry about and it won't go away.  So have a good time now and appreciate the minutes you got.  I speak from experience.  My arthritis has arthritis and now neuropathy.  But fuck it. I played hard in in my youth.  Backpacking and survival camping and martial arts. Then there was the repetitive work of landscaping and other dead end jobs and finally computers/

To relate, I have sciatic nerve problems, which I think stem from lower back problems. I work manual labor and I sit at desks to study at school.

For me, one important think is always protecting the spine with proper ergonomics. Look up ergonomics on the internet and find a crash course if you don't already know what it is about.

Another big thing I do to protect my back is to flex my abdomen (and posterior muscles) whenever I am bending or moving. By flexing my abdomen I am giving my spine a stiff rigid pallet that helps hold it in safely in its natural position. That is, my spine is naturally held in place and it does not have to bear awkward or strenuous amounts of weight.

e.g. imagine picking up a 60 pound weight without flexing your core. Your spine would bear the weight and you would probably end up with a hunch back. Conversely, I personally take a deep breath, hold it, and pick up the weight. This is called the valsalva maneuver. It is controversial because one has to hold their breath, but the benefit is clear in that one is able to stay clinched in the abdomen area. If you are uncomfortable with the valsalva maneuver you can use a controlled breath. That is, take a deep breath, pick up the object, and slowly let your air out all while maintaining a flexed abdomen.

I don't know what polishing cabochons is like, but I think this information could still benefit you. If you are bending your back at all then make sure to flex your abdomen muscles in order to protect your spine (even if you are sitting in a chair leaning over a table). At first this may seem like a hard task, but after 2 weeks you will adapt to the constant abdomen workout and eventually you won't even notice.

Keep in mind that you don't have to flex like superman. Just make sure you are using your abdomen in order to help your spine out.

That sounds like a good idea. It may help improve your ergonomics.

Protect the spine. Always.

Now my upper back hurts too where I broke it last summer. Might have to go in for something if 4 advil migraine doesn't work. I'm liable to start drinking rum otherwise.

You could try a heating pad while you work to help increase circulation around the area and rotate ice and the heating pad after you are done. If that doesn't help it's probably something deeper that should be checked out if it persists

Have someone take a photo from the side as you work. Or your camera on a timer. Show us (and see for yourself) what exact position you put your spine in. If this is THE ONLY situation that it hurts, IMO it should be obvious something's not kosher about the chair, bench, whatever it is, they don't fit your particular shape and size.

Have you considered some different type of chair? Something where you put less tension on the lower back? One concept that comes to mind is those Tron light bikes, the way riders sit on them, leaning forward. Seems to me you'd need something that would support your chest and allow your legs to sit in some comfy angle, that leaves your back straight and supported. Not necessarily vertical, probably leaning forward, but supported by the chair, not putting constant pressure on your lower back.

Kind of like a Tron bike, see what you can come up with. Chest pushing into it, close to your working area. Or in general take a snapshot from the side of how you sit at your work table, and compare to other images, see what position the spine ends up in.

Pain is temporary. It may last for a minute or an hour or a day or even a year but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it will last forever.
