Questions about WBS Jars
    #20598813 - 09/21/14 08:48 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

A friend of mine has some WBS Jars that he asked me to take a look at. They've been colonizing for roughly 3 weeks - a month. He used Franks WBS tek (with added gypsum), inoculated with P. Cubensis spores (golden teachers).

He's asked me to post a few questions on his behalf (he currently has no access to the internet)
He has 10 pint jars, some at about 95% colonization, some at only about 40 - 50%

1. A few of the jars have a "fermenting" kind of smell, smells a bit like feet  I'm assuming this points to some sort of bacterial infection. The jars look fine to me (from what I've seen online) and there's no obvious signs of contamination that I can spot, no discoloration, etc. Is this normal? or should he discard any jars that have that particular smell?

2. The jars have been colonizing for almost a month, how long should this generally take? is it detrimental to have fully colonized jars sitting whilst waiting for the rest to finish colonizing?

3. He thinks that some of the jars may have stalled. If this is the case, is it possible to break away the un-colonized parts of WBS and fruit the part that is colonized?

4. The Mycelium looks "fluffy", especially in the top of the jar. Is this normal?

5. My friend is a paranoid about fruiting jars with possible contams, thinking that it could get passed to the fruit and be dangerous to his health if consumed. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that usually if there is a contamination, fruit won't appear at all. Is this true?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance to anyone able to assist

You need to dispose of the "feet jars" promptly.

Then pray that the others didn't get contam-ed in the meantime.

A month for pint jars? I had some really slow moving stuff in quart jars that took about 3 weeks from inoculation to spawning, but I'm sad to say your jars are most likely stalled due to contamination. How did you prep the WBS and how long did you PC the jars for? Can you get pics up?

Unfortunately my friend has no way of sending me pics atm, if he can get his internet situation sorted I'll try get him to send me some. Prepped the WBS following Franks 12 Steps to Shrooms tek:

Quote:

Step Three: Grains
Measure the grains: Take your bag of WBS and measure out 10 cups or so into your stockpot. Once hydrated this should give you at least 12 quarts of grain.

Rinse the grains: Fill the pot with water, stir vigorously, remove any floaters (they will likely clog your sink), then dump carefully so as not to lose a lot of grain. Repeat until the water runs clear.

Soak the grains: Fill the pot with hot water, throw in a handful of garden gypsum, you can also add 6 cups of brewed coffee (liquid, not grounds) to the soak as well. Let this sit for at least 6 hours.

Heat the grains:
(if your WBS has no cracked corn in it) Put the stockpot on the stove and heat the water on medium-high until at a soft boil. Let this go for 2-5 minutes, then dump into a strainer (you will probably need two large strainers for the whole batch)

(if your WBS has cracked corn in it) Put the stockpot on the stove and heat on medium-high only to a simmer, then dump it right away into the strainer. Don't let it boil, it will release a lot of starch from the corn and make sticky clumps.

While the grains are steaming in the strainer, toss them around once or twice over an hour until they are dry on the outside.

Load the grains: Fill each quart jar 3/4 full with hydrated WBS. Close the lid somewhat tightly but do not make it an extra tight seal with the ring. Cover this with a square of foil.

Sterilize the grains: Put a canning rack in the bottom of your pressure cooker and fill with about 2-3 inches of water. Load your jars into the pressure cooker and seal the lid. Do not put the weight on quite yet.

Heat the PC on high and once the steam has been escaping from the vent for 5 minutes or so, put the 15psi weight on. When it begins to rattle (indicating 15psi), turn the heat down to medium or so and start a timer for 90 minutes. Try to minimize the number of rattles per minute to 3-4, but if that isn't possible then just keep it rocking steadily at medium heat.

When the time is up, turn the heat off and let the PC cool naturally. Do not mess with it until it is cool to the touch.

Oh. No point in trying to spawn a contaminated jar IMO, but you can drop a clean colonized grain onto agar and try again.

What kind of PC does he have? If it only has a 12psi weight a 2 hour cycle is recommended. At this point I def recommend dropping a clean grain onto agar. I was intimidated by agar at first but found the process to be cheap and easy.

I'm not sure what kind of PC it is to be honest. Cool man, I've always been interested in getting into Agar for myself actually. Do you have any links that could help get me started?
