Coir prep help!
    #20592796 - 09/20/14 01:25 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Okay. So, I took half a brick of coir for my MSG, a quart of verm, and added about 2 quarts of boiling water, let it sit for about an hour. (Following Damion5050's elementary coir tek) but.. The brick didn't completely expand/separate.. Should I add another quart of boiling water or something?

whatever it takes, just check your moisture content before you use it

How exactly would I go about that?

Should it release any water?

yea search for 'field capacity' maybe try to find videos showing it. a few drops with a light squeeze, a small semi stream with a hard squeeze that quickly runs out. kinda hard to explain until you see it first hand.

and break up your coir before you put it in the bucket. its very easy if you go from the ends of the brick. like shove  knife into the end of the brick and flke off pieces

Awesome. Thank you for your help.
If I do inadvertently exceed optimal moisture content, could I just load the mix into a strainer, and force the bulk of the water out with downward pressure?

better by the handfull it's nmore consistant. no need to check every last bit of it if there's too much water just add a little more verm

i always add a little extra water and just squeeze out my handfuls of sub as i load them into my tubs. i keep a bucket next to me for that. i dont add too much extra cause you dont wanna squeeze out a bunch of nutrient tea (not sure how much you would loose but i just try to avoid it)

after a few times you can just squeeze as you load without even really paying attention once you know how it should be
