Inoculation prep

Hi Shroomery! Long time reader here and first time posting. I'm currently prepping for my first grow and my first inoculation. I could not find any specific "professional grade" masking tape to cover the inoculation holes during the sterilizing process but I did find regular scotch masking tape. Is this the same thing? Or does it matter at all? Also curious about using coffee filters for air/contam filtration during PC or steaming. I have the Kerr 1/2 pint wide mouth canning jars. I'm using the BRF/PF cake method and do not have access to a pressure cooker. So any advice or suggestions on air/contam filtration are greatly appreciated Thank you for reading!

Don't use tape just poke 4 holes in the lid with a nail for your innoc points, cover with aluminum foil, and sterilize in a PC. The tape is not necessary. Once your sterilization process is complete let em cool 24 hrs and you can take the foil off and inoculate your jars. Keep the foil off thereafter. So long as you have a dry verm barrier on top (about 1/4 - 1/2" is about all you need) this will keep contams out, and no need for tape. Are you using PF/BRF tek btw?

Yes I am and trying to stick to the tek exactly as it says but I'm considering ways to decrease contam rates because I don't have access to a PC. I will be doing the steam sterilization method with a pot + lid I'm also considering the silicone injection port tek

You'll be way more at risk of contamination using tape as a filter. Drill a 1/2" hole in each jar lid and stuff them tightly with polyester stuffing fiber, a huge bag of which can be purchased at Walmart for less than $5. It is worth the minuscule investment, as the poly-stuffed hole provides ample air exchange for the jars and is a halfway decent alternative to actual self-healing injection ports. Of course, make sure you take care of that step prior to sterilization.

Just flame your needle and work in a SAB and you're good to go. And steam sterilizing cakes works just fine.
Lol okay thank you for the advice!
Any suggestions and advice/tips are completely welcome, as this is my first go around!

Thank you for the reply! I have a few questions about this Using this method should one only drill 1 hole per lid? Or multiple for different injection sites? And is this your personal method you use and has it worked for you well?

hes doing pf jars though so no need for poly fill or nothing. just the 4 innoc holes (make sure they are big enough for your syringe) nd the dry verm layer for protection. and you can take the foil off right after the PC. im always worried about the dry layer getting moist so i take it off right away to let it breath after the hot steamy sterilization
