Muda
What I hear you saying is...
I could inoculate 2 bricks of coir with a big agar wedge.
thinkin big bags.
Is that what you are saying?
Any advantages of skipping the spawn run (tradiontal) besides time?

yah you could but you would need to supplement the coir with something like grain or BRF to make up for the nutrition normally supplied by the spawn. You will also want to turn that agar wedge into Liquid Inoculant or it will take forever to colonise(second link in my sig). The biggest advantage is just how easy and simple it is. All you do is prep your substrate, Inoculate, wait and then fruit. Its easier than PF tek. Also by eliminating both the spawn run, pasteurization and the spawning process there is a much lower risk of contamination.
I like to use jars and just fruit them in my GH.

It's no longer "insanely cheap" if you need a pressure cooker.w

How do you figure that. You only need to buy the PC once. After that each jar can be made for 15 cents or less. There are lots of really cheep PCs out there that will do the job. My first PC was only $35. For anyone who is in anyway serious about this hobby a PC is a necessity.

A cheap PC costs about as much as a generic 400w MH or HPS light bulb for hydroponic grows. It's really not bad... I actually am growing on BRF I ground from brown rice that safeway gave away -free- one per customer last summer, haha.

Good info Muda.
I might try this at some point.
I've seen people fruit king oysters from the jars.
Same principles I believe

My PC was $19.99. It's served me well but now I need a bigger one lol. Correct me if I misread but are you saying you don't even spawn to grain or pasteurize? Do you just shoot your LI into sterilized bulk substrate? Brain is full of fuck.

I mix grains and bulk substrate material together in qt jars then PC them. Once they cool I inoculate them with LI and fruit them when they are colonised. It's quite similar to the way a lot of commercial growers do edibles just with different materials.

PF Tek costs less then $50 from start to finish, assuming you have access to a stock pot. This process is "cheap" in my opinion.
So stating mushrooms could be grown "Insanely cheap" should be less then $50 and even if I'm buying the cheapo $20 PC it's still 40% of my budget for "cheap"... Certainly not "insanely cheap."

If you spend half your budget on a PC and jars that still leaves $25 which can buy enough material to make 166 quart jars the way I make them. that should yield over 50 ounces. Try doing that for $50 with PF tek.

But you don't need a PC for PF tek and if you're even remotely civilized you have a big enough pot to steam a couple half pints... Just sayin.

That's true. To be honest I have no first hand experience with PF tek. I just never bothered trying it. So I have no idea what the costs are.

I did it a few times because of how cheap it was and to get a basic grasp of the life cycle of mushrooms. When I found out how much I enjoy this hobby it kind of snowballed and now here I am fruiting my first 66qt mono with grain spawn and doing agar plates lol.
