First grow need help small fruit amounts re dunk after one or two grow?
    #20588961 - 09/19/14 02:59 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

http://Okay I just posted this in he wrong place...
I have a question, this is my first grow using the pf tek with BRF. I have eight cakes. Seven in my SGFC. Four of those have fruited. Either one or two fruits only. I dunked half of them and half didn't to experiment, unfortunately I have moved them around and don't remember which ones I dunked and which I did :-).
But I feel it's going good for my first grow. I have gotten one or two mature mushrooms on a few cakes and some have never fruited. Last night I picked two mature ones off one cake. There are no other fruits, but since only one or two grew should I leave it in fruiting chamber for longer or do I re dunk now that I have harvested?
I also have a dunked cake in a ziplock gallon size bag for experiment purposes and I have one fruit coming off of it, but it's larger than the cake itself. It's huge! I'm going to pick it tonight, but should I re dunk immediately or give it time to possibly grow more?
Also, the two I picked last night weighed about 4.32 g. If I were to eat it fresh, how do the fresh ones compare to the dry weight? Would that be too much or too little for one to eat?

I don't think there's be any harm in dunking and maybe vermiculite rolling all the cakes so they're on the same page, if none of them are actively pinning now.

Ballpark is said to be 1/10th fresh is the equivalent dry, but it's a little more complex taking into account oxidation and degredation of actives when drying.

Check out Shroomery's dosage calcuator, it works for fresh and dry, so you can get a feel for the equivalent doses fresh or dry:
Shroomery Mushroom Dosage Calculator

4.3g fresh is too little to eat, IMO. Unless you're doing microdosage or something.

Yes I made a sgfc out of a 50 something gallon plastic tote thing. I have four inches of perlite in it and he bf said to keep humidity up we needed to tape some holes. I fan it up to like ten times a day when I am home but like four when I work. I have been getting humidity to about 91 percent but my hygrometer isn't calibrated. The second one I ordered turned out to be not waterproof and I wanted to make sure I always had one in while I was doing this so yes I need to calibrate it and will ASAP. I always mist after I fan and spray the lid of the container also. It has a cfl light above it I cut a hole in the lid the set it on top and I leave the light on 12 to 18 hrs a day

Ok I read that and your post . I haven't been spraying the perlite or the cakes, I read to not do that but now that I have tried that I am going to take the tape off and spray the cake and the perlite. Thanks for your advice.

:whathesaid:
What was the point in drilling the holes in the first place if you just covered them all in tape... That light looks like its going to cook your cakes and your plastic to me as well.

Also you probably don't need to put the light on them for long periods of time, IMO 12 to 18 hours a day is way too much.. I use to leave the light on for a good hour or two a day and it seems that was enough because I got a bunch of healthy mushies.

While the light was on, (according to my temp gun) cake temps never exceed 76 degrees. I am going to try a less amount of hours for light.

I originally went a little crazy with the drill (was having fun) and made some rows of holes too close together so I started with some tape and ended up coving the majority of the holes.
I ended up taking every piece off last night and making my foil pieces smaller around cakes.
I also started misting perlite vs the terrarium and also the cakes. The big one I had in the other pic weighed like 27 g.
Next step is to find a new place for my terrarium. Currently, they are in a room with my reptiles in it and various plants. I have other mammal pets as well and liked being able to close that room off but since my blinds are open a lot for the other plants I had to keep it low.
Maybe I will try the living room?
Also have an opened cap currently printing. Hope I can learn LC soon and I have three more jars that have been 100% colonized since at least Monday, I am unsure exactly when it happened because I don't check them everyday like I used to.

My new updated SGFC. Hope this gets humidity higher.
How often do you replace perlite?
I love being able to communicate with people who know more about this than I do!!

It can be used indefinitely.

There is never really a need to replace it.

This is terrible advice......we have known for years that a 12/12 schedule helps them flourish.....Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.

Maybe not the best advice, but certainly not terrible. Obviously a 12/12 schedule isn't  required because I was able to grow them successfully in the past without following this strict rule.

Growing cubes successfully, and growing a them to their fullest potential are 2 different things.

No, a 12/12 schedule is not required, but it does help...mushrooms derive energy from light....why deprive them of that energy?
