Mold spore germination timeframe
    #20587444 - 09/19/14 08:59 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

If a grain jar got contaminants in it, how long would you propose before you would see them? I dropped an agar wedge in a few jars and didn't shake or otherwise move anything around and I'm curious if you think they would germinate and show before the mycelium colonizes over the area.

BTW the wedge is basically at the edge of the jar.

Between 2 days and after your first flush. Molds like trich often mesh themselves with you cube myc and will not be easy to spot until its too late. Good procedure is essential to success with agar.

So you don't think it would germinate and begin to grow on the other side of the jar? Basically the myc will roll over it before it would germinate?

Maybe hard to say for sure. Mold spores can germinate very quickly. Sometimes they germinate with the myc and will become very difficult to spot. They have the advantage of not needing to form a dykarotic pair the way higher fungi do so they already have a step ahead at that point.

Moral. Practice good techniques.

Understood. Just wondering if I left the jar unmolested if I would see separate mold growth if it had gotten in there.

You might. I always seperate jars that I feel are the victims of sloppy procedure and if I do spawn then I do it seperately.

Well its not spores, there's an agar wedge in there so that doesn't really apply.

Well you will know one way or another eventually.  The key is to note what you did or didn't do for each jar then use that to either confirm your procedure is good or not. If this is your first time inoculating with culture then think if it as a time of learning. If you have success good but don't bank on it. Build on your successes and learn from mistakes. You'll be growing like a boss in no time.

Uh huh. Apparently you haven't seen my 88364 page, 4 month long battle to find where my contams are coming from lol.

Wise words nonetheless.

I had but unless I get in on them soon or its a topic I am keenly interested in I usually won't intrude on the epic contam meltdown threads. PM me the coles notes version if you want and I will give you my take.
