Repercussions of split WBS?

I did a little too much simmering on my WBS. Approximately 50% is split. I know this could lead to easier contams but should I be ok to get atleast 1 flush out of these? There is no excess moisture, water content looks good.

Rinse them in hot water to wash away the gummy goop and let them drain real good in a strainer. As long as it isn't complete mush you'll be fine.

at 50% I'd just start over. 5-10% is normal for me no matter what, but try turning down the heat when you simmer.

I've heard that split grain is a contam waiting to happen. Where did this come from and is there no truth to it?

It just makes it all gummy and starchy and it smears all over the glass when you cook it and shake it up. Sterile is sterile though either it's contaminated or it isn't, no matter how messy it is.

It's not complete gunk. Each seed is still seperated.
I did wash the seeds off post simmer, inoculated using MS on 9/14. No signs of growth yet, fingers crossed!

The whole point of "grains" in nature is to protect the delicious starchy contents of each grain from bacteria and other pests.
Split grains release their payload and make it easier for bacteria to take hold in the gooey goodness.
However, keep in mind that you don't plan to have any bacteria in your jars if you can possibly help it.

Well I PC'd at 15 PSI for 90 minutes. I don't seen any signs of contams yet.

What about when you shake and spawn? Does it make it any more contam prone once the mycelium is beat back? If you have soft grains and go to break them up wouldn't you expose uncolonized portions if they're not hard?

I've had success with a ton of sticky burs grains of WBS It takes longer to colonise and doesn't shake that well but you can get away with it.

We will see what happens then. They aren't THAT bad. Broke apart relatively easy with little - no starch on the inside of the jars.

WBS is so cheap, I'd have started over and done it like How Foo Prepares Wild Bird Seed. In my opinion, it's the best way to do WBS.

Soon I'm still tweaking my method a bit to get it just right. I may just make a tek this weekend and edit it as I Improve my system.

I will follow that TEK from now on. Seems a lot easier with less variables. Thanks!

I like the idea I would just hate to tie up the jar that long. Put a liner in and pull em out and put in a red solo cup lol.

Awesome!! Have you thought about/tried using Violet's bottom watering TEK with it?

I just tried it on one jar today. Time will tell if it helps or not.
