My substrate is gonna be vermiculite coco coir and brown rice flour * 1
    #20585256 - 09/18/14 07:16 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

When I mix these how much water do I add? And what ratio of each substrate? And I just need foil to cover the jar?

When I mix it together how long to soak before putting it in the PC?

And for how long in the PC and at what temp? Thanks

skip the coir and just stick to the tek, brf verm and water! save the coir for when there colonized and spawn the cakes if ya like but no need for coir in a cake

short half pints with the tapered top so the cake can slide out.

you dont want big cakes even if you could slide them out. they can stall in the jar

i guess it depends what edibles...im not sure brf cakes is your best bet for any edibles but some are very aggresive and could maybe colonize a pint quickly but for cubes some times they stall by the bottom and it could be the same for others.. are you growing edibles?

Most pints I've seen stall out and you can't get the cake out because of the shoulder at the top.

You would be better off using sawdust.

it will work out with oysters but the ultimate goal is a cheap and effective sub to get ahead of the game, brf is expensive and wood is cheaper then verm and coir and oysters are a woodlover

When you hydrate them they turn back into sawdust. Look up sawdust blocks and read all you can.

Another thing to note is the colonization time of 1 pint vs 1/2 pint are basically double. You can get wide mouth pints though.

for cakes you can simply replace the verm with sawdust or better yet go 50/50 verm and sawdust so it's stil 2:1:1 but half the verm is sawdust.

Or you could just go to grains. I started with PF cakes now I am doing WBS. Just seems easier/cheaper to me.
