quick question about mycobags
    #20583615 - 09/18/14 12:49 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

When working with mycobags should you wait until the entire grow media is covered in mycelium before wrapping the sides in foil?
Or would it even matter since only the top will be fruiting anyway?

The foil makes the mushrooms that pop up on the side grow up towards light. Instead of all sideways and crazy

Manure based compost, my last grow I did without the foil and they grew.in all directions on the sides.
And yes the muSHROOMS I'm growing are phototropic as well as all P.cubensis.

you need spawn as well, spores wont germinate in a bag of pure substrate.

Side pins are caused by the gap between the bag or tub and the substrate.  This creates an ideal microclimate for primordia formation. Wrapping in foil is just a waste of foil.

I'm not trying to stop them from growing on the sides. my goal is to get them all to grow up(towards the light at the top of the foil) so their easier to pick.:mushroom2:

If you want them to grow up either have the light directly above or grow in the dark (Not recommended). They orient their caps to the strongest light source and growth will follow. If your light source is from above then the foil was just a waste of time and foil.

Indirect light from a large window. If I were to add the right lights could the growing process be
sped up/ potentialy increase the quality of the mushroom?
Maybe some cold led lights

LED sucks unless your gonna drop a few grand on em. Just get a daylight cfl between 5000-7000K. Direct light is better for fruiting anyway.  I have grown with indirect windo light and cap size often suffers.

I had always assumed the direct sunlight beaming down on them would be to much an stop growth

Direct sunlight will often raise temps in the chamber to a level that will favor contams but direct light is good for cubes. Some direct sunlight every day can be beneficial tho. Light gives them energy and will improve the overall fruit development.
