why aren't my cakes fruiting or changing much!?!?
    #20582729 - 09/18/14 08:30 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So I started these in the fc back on the 13. They were fluffing up pretty well the first few days then they seem to have stopped doing anything. It's super humid and warm in there. But I confess I didn't let it consolidate for a week b4 transfer.  Only about 2-3 days.

well then you need to let it sit there and do nuthing lol, it's gonna consolidate weather or not its' in the jar but now you gotta babysit it, you should have dunked and rolled and you shouldnt' be sittign it on verm, it will try to colonize it and ful colonization is a keypinning trigger, besides that verm isn't a replacement for perlite btu other then that good luck

Build a shotgun fruiting chamber and buy some perlite.

I've got em sitting on the jar tops so it's at least not in direct contact with the vermiculite

It's my understanding that once you take them out of the jars you need to clean off the old dry vermiculite from the top, it has acted as a barrier to contaminants and so could easily be harbouring some. Once you start misting, it will get wet and those contams may start growing.

I've thought about misting but the humidity is so high I'm not sure I need to.

Yes, the verm is a layer of "casing (if you will)", it provides more moisture and protection from contams.

We do not mist for humidity, we mist to replace lost moisture in the cakes.

Is there a way to tell if the cakes are drying out? I squeezed them near the bottom and they were pretty firm.
Ps. I've been fanning them 2 to 3 times a day for probably 9 ver a week at this point with absolutely no changes to be seen
Pps. If one does not mist directlyou on the cakes (I've heard this is wrong) then how would it affect it and not just raise said humidity in the chamber?
Lots o questions!  Thanks

just pick it up son't sqeeze them, limit the amount fof times you handle them.
if you dont' mist the cakes directly they don't get moisture replenished and sometimes dry out to a point where the myc gets strressed turns yellow and matts up

Update
Got my first little guy growin! But I looked at my other 2 cakes and they're kinda bruised (?) Is it just bruising? Cuz I really haven't touched either of them. I've begun misting and they're getting water on them. Not sure how to avoid this if I'm misting directly. Looking good tho otherwise.

Why didn't you roll them in verm to begin with? That is going to provide the microclimate you need at the surface to pin. The myc looks all yellowed and dying, I doubt you will see much from them now. Get started on more while you wait and see what you can get from these.

why aren't my cakes fruiting? I haven't provided an adequate environment or taken any of the necessary steps required to initiate fruiting...and they still won't fruit?! oh wait! there's one! ...kind of

So that's the synopsis of this thread. Ta-dah.
