So im in the process of making and SAB. I have some cleanout adapters which I want to use as armholes. With the lid being corrugated I was wondering what would be the best way to this. I.E. Lid at the top or the bottom
I think I can probably saw the cleanout adapters down a bit so that Don't poke too far in. They are screw on and would be really useful.

Looks good to me, I don't think you need the adapters at all unless you are going to attach tyvek sleeves/gloves to the inside of the box. Lid should go on top if its corrugated. Otherwise if its upside-down it would be hard to set your jars down. Or you could lose the lid altogether and set the SAB upside-down on a towel which would fill the gaps between the box and the table better than the lid would anyways.

Dont u like the idea of screwing it up tight and tidy?
I mean I could easily attack gloves if I wanted and its still a hole.

Mine doesn't have a lid. It sits top down on towels dampened with bleach water. Also no need to attach anything to it. When you put your (hopefully clean and gloved) hands into it, that displaces clean air out of the box, and you can work with very little risk of sucking open air into the SAB. attaching something actually increases the risk of sucking in open air. Also when you cut the holes, trace out an ideal sized circle and cut it out with a hot butter knife like you'd smoke hash with. Works really well. Plumbing cleanouts are a very inventive closing system though

lol yeah an SAB is one of those "simplicity is beauty" things. The other really important thing to do is spray the inside with soapy water. TBH I only built my first SAB last Sunday, but it seemed to work extremely well. I will have to eat my words if my agar gets contaminated though

Put a pan on your stove on high. Put an empty coffee can upside down in the pan. Once hot, melt the arm holes. Very simple

what filter are you using in your jar lids? dont quote me on this but I think its penicillium that has tiny tiny spores which can get through some filters.
try to have jars colonizing in a tote or soemthing to cut down the mold spores on your filter, but again UTSE because I'm not 100% sure.
why the pan on the stove, why not the can directly on the heat element on your oven? empty pans on the stove = in my book!

Making the SAB is easy, but using it can be a little tricky at first.
Even with a sketchy SAB if you do the misting to knock stuff out of the air then do the work it's fine. I recently made another new one myself with arm holes because I started getting contams from having rolls of carpet in the same room, and I do like how Bodhi and Pussyfart etc. say to --
1) Give the jars or whatever you'll be working with a quick wipe with some iso and put them in the sab (make sure the rings aren't cranked on real tight too, sucks trying to crank them off with wet gloves). 2) Mist the inside of the SAB with slightly soapy water to knock stuff out of the air, then let the mist settle a few moments. 3) Do the work and try your best not to make any jerky movements that stir up the air more. And don't put your hands or anything unsterilised over the top of the containers. (add anything if I'm missing something)
also) flame outside, bring inside. Give your gloves a mist of soap water or even iso if you're careful. My new one is way more forgiving than my shitty one, which also worked great for the most part until recently. some people put a layer of paper towel on the bottom to soak up the spray water. Don't have to go nuts with the spraying to knock stuff out of the air.

do you put in the iso washed jars BEFORE you spray down your sab?
I'd think you just shoot the nasties back on your jars.. but maybe it doesnt matter because all you want is for stuff to be wet so mold spores wont flow around?

I spray down my SAB only when its empty, and as soon as its empty again, because yes what you said. Usually ill do 6-8 plates at a time between spraying, or 5-6 jars

This SAB is bomb, love the magnetic armhole cover idea. I could only find magnets that were adhesive on one side, and the adhesive is absolute shit compared to RTV or super glue. So when i go to bring my gloved hand out, it gets stuck to the sticky side thats facing into my SAB. Ive already lost one of my armholes twice

This is what I did as well. Very simple, very easy, very quick. No hassle with any drills or butter knives or anything.
