Dog Food Agar
    #20579976 - 09/17/14 03:10 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

i recently read an old book on mush cultivation that stated you can take dog food agar all the way to fruiting.

has anyone tried this recently?

i was thinking of making up some pint jars with a half inch or so of dfa and doing an ms inoculation, then fruiting it in the same jar.

im not going for yield or anything, im wanting to find a nice looking cluster to clone.

i like dfa for a quick pin on a plate but i dont' see much for a cluster from agar most of the time but that doesn't mean you won't get them.
the last time i simply let my no pour pin and dropped my pin right in a shallow grain jar(had about a pint of grain in a qt) and it seems to be working great and will be fruiting quickly

thanks!

i was also thinking of using some whole grain brown rice to fruit in a jar.

do you think i would have a better chance at a cluster in a jar there?

yes i do, maybe you should check out violets culturing thread, i don't have a link handy but i think it may work out for ya.
also something as simple as pasty's easy agar tek is great for pinning agar, i would start a pasty plate and once i had a clean culture transfer to like 2-4 more plates, leave a couple to pin and use the others to put to some grain and see where your at

ive already got powdered agar so ill just get some pp5s and work with those.

i have some plastic petri dishes but pouring agar into them is a PITA for me because of the size of my pc (i have to split 500ml into two quart jars) and the newness of the whole thing.

i have skimmed through violets method previously and think that is gonna be the route i go
:thanx:

for agar i usually do ten plates at a time, yea im small time. but i use a olive oil bottle with the liquor looking pour top taken off, its like a 14 oz bottle, i also use a snapple bottle with that one when i do a whole sleeve. i imagine pouring plates out of a qt jar would suck massive godzilla cock. are bottles like that too tall for your PC? why do you have to use qt jars?

i used the qt jars last time because they were the largest thing i could fit in my pc.
i used two of them because i was worried about boil over.
