Azurescens and cyanescens same species?
    #20576254 - 09/16/14 05:37 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Has anyone else noticed that cyanescens and azurescens like the same areas? both have the same stipe and cap (cyan's cap usually just wavy) They both are far more potent then cubensis (similair to each other) They inhabit the same substrates in the same areas. This idea was brought in to myself through Paul Kroeger of the Vancouver mycological society.

I would agree that Cyan is only a mutation in the cap of Azurescens. Thoughts?  If this belongs somewhere else i apologize.

With the info i saw, everything even down to the spores themselves are almost completely identical. According to Paul of the vancouver mycological society, they are the same mushroom, only differnce is the cap, i just couldn't understand why if it's this obvious, others havn't pointed it out.

I don't have specimens myself to validate this claim, but from what i can gather online, he is right, they are almost 100% identical, even down to the spores themselves the differnces are negligable, aside form the wavy cap, which we all know presents itself in a LOT of mushrooms, his theory is that some isolated pocket of azurescens developed this trait and was alloud to reproduce and something about the differnce in the cap made it easier for them to survive with that mutation in said location, so they beat out the normal azurescens, and somehow either naturally or unaturaly the were released from this small area

I guess a great way to be sure would to let the monocaryotic mycellia of a cyan grow into the monocaryotic (i know i spelled both of those wrong) mycellia of an azurecens and see if they produce a dicot mycellia.

Here's a good macroscopic comparison between psilocybe azurescens, cyanescens and subaeruginosa. Unfortunately the OP has removed the pics.

Of the three species azurescens is most unique. From my observations the bright white fluffy mycelium of azurescens is also unmistakable when compared to both cyanescens and subaeruginosa mycelium

It sounds like if the caps are different, something has to be different inside its DNA, so even if they were the same species they would be genetically distinct , like different cat breeds making them seperate sub species

Ok i can read that link after this post lol. Gotta get to 10, and not having delved very deep into the mycology field as of yet im still quite a novice and naive when presented with new information. He seemed credible, and his information seemed legit, but as im looking into it more and more, i would agree in the seperation of species, however i will maintain my belief that the seperation between them was more recent then say, cyan and cubensis.

I will also maintain i see greater differences between the mycellia and fruiting characteristics of cubensis by itself, then i have ever even come close to seeing in other species (however anecdotal my experience with them is) And in a lot of cases more than the visual differnces in azur. and cyan. between the two as a species (also anecdotal) But the differences in spore appearence between these "strains" of cubensis is nil.

I think the strangeness of the kindom of fungi is what is keeping such a distracted mind like mine intrigued. Not many forums im a member of where i return after my inactive bout. I may be a year more experienced and have  a lot more experience under my belt now then i do when i found the site. But shit i have a lot to learn. And most of it has been part of the collective longer than ive been alive.

On a side note a large part of my front yard is blooming with dozens of Amanita Theirsii, the beauty of autumn is finally returning

edit: i really meant more of a subspecies of the same thing. Didn't mean to make it sound like i think they are the SAME mushroom
