All good things must come to an end :)
    #2057427 - 10/30/03 04:11 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

My friend started off with 12 pf cakes and taken most of them now into their 4th flush. He has duncked in 1/10 h202 and added new verm to the bald spots between each flush. After each 24hr dunk he is losing on average 1 to 2 cakes to the green meenies. Is there anything he can do to prolong the life of the remaining 5 cakes, or is this just the normal cycle of events?
Thanks!

From what I've read, 4th flush is just great, but by then the cakes are old and weak.

it ain't over til it's over.

you could use them as spawn (grated finely with a cheesegrater, or crumbled finely through a ziplock bag) for pasteurised bulk (straw and/or poo)....... or you could bury them outside if you're lucky enough to be in a warm climate. otherwise you could use a central piece to inoculate further substrate ...... or juggle with them.... or even wear them as a hat or something.

LOL! That's great! He can try to use it in some other grow if there is green shit on it???

would spawning with a spent casing still produce good shrooms, or is their nutrient quality based on the new spawn material? Thanks

if there is green shit on it, all you can do is bury it outside. assuming there is no evidence of contamination, though, you have live mycelium that will happily produce mushrooms for as long as you keep it happy.

it has nearly eaten all the nutrients you gave it, so try to give it some more. here's what i'd do: i'd use a clean knife to pare off the outer skin of the cake (most likely to be suspect). then i'd put it in a clean ziplock, and break it up through the bag. if anything in the middle looks suspect, chuck it out - the beauty of this is that you only need a little bit of good stuff to get started again. now use this crumbled myc to inoculate pasteurised straw/poo. don't be too greedy - more than about 1:5 will mean a long delay, and probable failure. if you were supercareful and used sterile technique, you could use a piece to inoculate sterilised pf substrate in a new ziplock bag - there are a few threads about this around just now.

think of it as if you made a spore print from one of your mushies - any viable myc can go around the cycle again. try it. you got nothing to lose.

my friend did as Shirley suggested and spawned straw that had been treated in bleach solution.
It's been slow but no contams yet because of the bleach even though it is on an open shelf.
