not at all really,
you don't want any turbulent air in your work space. turn off all air fans appliances filters etc...

Yeah I just meant run one to keep ambient dust and the like at a minimum. If for nothing else than to breathe easier

What you are missing is laminar flow. While I won't get into ways around it I will say that filter will provide close to sterile air. But it really won't be air that you can work in as it will be mixed with non sterile air since it isn't laminar.

I must have overlooked everything but the first sentence of this post somehow. Either that, or there was a glitch. Either way, again, thanks for replying.

What about this guy? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Flanders-0-009-4-19-04-SU-00-00-23G36Q6-Laminar-Flow-Grade-VLSI-Filter-/351155279332?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51c27c55e4

Missing a screen though. What kind of screen do they use? Where might I find it?

you can't just use any filter. there's a bunch of math involved in matching a filter to a blower motor. you need to know the CFM of the blower motor and the static pressure rating of the filter, the amount of air and the velocity of that air determine if that filter will produce laminar flow too much too fast or too little too slow and you will not achieve laminar flow from a laminar HEPA filter. you don't need a flow hood and you need to do a shitload more research if you're still going to consider one despite the fact that you really don't need one

I'm aware that not any filter can be used. That said, why would one not achieve laminar flow using a laminar HEPA filter, assuming that it has in fact been matched appropriately to a blower motor? Also, this is research. The sole purpose behind my presence here right now, or ever, is to conduct research. As far as I know, the fastest and most effective way to research something, is to consult a bunch of people who are likely more knowledgeable in the matter. So...

If you match a filter with enough static pressure to an adequate blower you would get laminar flow.

sort of

you need to know things like the air from the blower needs to enter at 90º to the filter not 180º, you need to know your plenum volume as well, you need to know how much static pressure the filter develops at your blowers CFM and have that match accordingly to produce laminar flow. There's more to the design than just the blower CFM and filter static pressure the design has to be just right as well.

Hey guys and gals, I'm new here to whole thing. I'm thinking about building a real flow hood. Good quality design, quality filter from Fungi Perfect, and a blower from grainger. I've done my research, but what I can't find any info on is what does the pre filter do to static pressure ? Fungi Perfect has a 12 x 12 99.99 HEPA with a rating of 120 cfm at .5 static pressure. I know how to look up the fans cfms at static pressure, I just don't know what the pre filter will do to static pressure rating(A), and will the static pressure be achieved by the boxed in design of my flow hood and HEPA filter? I would like to build a box on top with the  fan and pre-filter then blow into the plenum. If I have a fan capable of performing at my static pressure rating of the filter will it be laminar flow ?

Thank you !
