To answer your question, No. not efficiently, if at all. You could save so much time/money and a good vaccume cleaner just building a SAB with more efficiency than that thing in the instructable; the size of it look's comparable to a few temporary-SABs I've had before.
I'm in the "I want a flow hood!" camp too; It sucks blows; I've read through everything, crunched some numbers and, I hate to do it, being a natural born half-ass myself, but... it looks like a properly built flow hood is the way to go, economically

if anything a SAB is more economical, less cost, less know how, less work.

Yeah. I have a SAB. I've had more problems than I expected. While we're on the subject,is there any reason the hepa filters used in some vacuums wouldn't work? I noticed some for sale (just the filters) at a grocery store. They were like $25. According to the label, they seem to meet the required specs. 99.7%/0.3 Microns, etc. Am i missing something?

What you are missing is laminar flow. While I won't get into ways around it I will say that filter will provide close to sterile air. But it really won't be air that you can work in as it will be mixed with non sterile air since it isn't laminar.

Thank you for the reply. However, I was referring to the filters.

yes it's not a laminar flow filter. it's just a hepa filter that does 0 good for this hobby
something like this http://www.terrauniversal.com/laminar-flow-hoods/particle-filters.php
they're usually in the hundreds of dollar range.
A SAB is way more useful for a hobby mycologist. it's easier to work with which I mean it's requires more skill to have good sterile technique with a FH than using a SAB. With a FH you can't work with contaminated cultures which you often will as a hobby mycologist to clean up cultures grown out from spores etc...
if you're a noob and you think you need a FH to make your life easier you're fooled, you need to work on your skill and technique first.

I said the filter is adequate for filtering contams if you wanna run it in your workspace, but you can't make a hood out of it.

yea but you didn't explain what that meant, and other people have things to add.
Why bother running a filter like that in your work space. if you go from having 10^8 contaminants in your work room down to 10^7 because of that filter running then you're still fucked if you don't know what you're doing.
it's about as dumb as spraying lysol in a bathroom to try to "sanitize" it.

Hey now it kills 99.9% of germs on contact.
But.......only if that contact is saturated for 50 secs or more and only if that contact is on a totally non porous surface lol

.01 of a million is 10,000 still left around. not good enough considering there's more than millions of spores and bacteria around every place on the planet that you can do mycology work. you're going to need good sterile technique, not corner cutting precautions.

Just let him hook up his vaccum cleaner, spray lysol, and flame sterilize his hands.

great post
you planning on helping OP learn something about how to use a SAB or have something to add about flow hoods?
or are you really actually having a problem with people posting good advice after your bad advice?

How is running a true hepa in your workspace a bad idea? I wouldn't expect him to believe an air purifier would grab a significant amount of airborne stuff and do open air work.
I gave constructed advice that wasn't the repeated "build a sab". Said yeah its a hepa and will filter contams to an extent, said no, you can't use it to build a hood or a sterile workspace. Told him he wouldn't get laminar flow from it.
Someone is in a bad mood this evening lol
