Amanita Rubescens (blusher) ID please
    #20570587 - 09/15/14 12:43 PM (9 years, 6 months ago)

Hi,
I saw this while walking through the woods and thought it was a panther cap, but after looking at pics and doing a bit of reading I have found it could have been a blusher. Unfortunately I don't really have much info besides the pictures and that it was found in a birch dominant woodland. I didn't take it home so haven't done a spore print.

There does appear to be some red bruising on it. Amanita rubescens seems likely.

Good to know, next time I see one I'll bring it home with me, I hear they are pretty tasty... Is that cover over the gills the veil? I didn't realise they get to that size before it breaks properly.

Be sure to cook rubescens thoroughly before consumption. Raw rubescens contains some toxins that can really mess with your blood, but they are destroyed by cooking.
