Light during incubation?
    #20570565 - 09/15/14 12:38 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Sorry for the long post just a bit confused. I've read many conflicting posts on this subject, most ppl say to get your colonization/incubating jars in the dark because light is a pinning trigger while others say that light is fine, just not indirect, say that if you let your jars incubate/colonize in indirect sunlight than you lose that 'pinning trigger' when it's time to fruit. And a bunch more post about why they need to colonized in darkness or post where they need indirect sunlight... I've just read so many different opinions so I'm a little confused. My jars are sitting on a shelf in a small room, they are just exposed to the ambient light that comes through three windows with closed blinds and the mycelium is spreading fine IMO. Any feedback/explanations to help clear this up for me is greatly appreciated guys. Also the incubation period and colonization  are just two terms meaning the same thin right?
Sorry for the long post . Much appreciated guys

Just listen to the ones from RR. Search for light pinning trigger. Then comented by RogerRabitt. He goes off extensively about how there is no truth to this thought process. Light is beneficial during all stages of growth. 12/12 cycles with 6500k light.

incubating in the dark is a 30yr old thought which is disproved today.
ambient light on a 12/12 schedule is what everyone recommends.
either way works but the myc has a circadian rhythm like we do.

incubation is letting the jars colonize in an incubator which is unneccessary and usually leads to more trouble than good.

just leave your jars on a shelf anywhere in your house and you're golden!

Light is a secondary pinning trigger meaning that light alone won't start pinning.
Incubation time and colonisation are the same thing except if we speak of incubation it probably means there is some kind of heat source involved to keep the temps high enough.
If you use the search function look at the date of the posts or limit your search to posts not older than 3years. I had the same problem in when I started out, not looking at the date of the post...

Aweaome thanks guys I'm gonna leave them where they are. One more question... What about the posts that said when you colonize within range of indirect sunlight it sacrifices using light as a pinning trigger when it comes time to start fruiting, does that hold any water?

the main pinning trigger is full colonization, a jar will eventually pin even in the dark if left to sit too long.(most of the time lol)

the next triggers, im not sure the exact order of importance but you need them all anyway for optimal fruiting conditions, they are fresh air exchange and evaporation off the substrate. so make sure you mist your cakes directly and have plenty of fresh air constantly coming in (SGFC) and you will be fine

intense 12/12 light is secondary but is extremely beneficial to your pinset and development of your fruits. they need no kind of 'light shock' to pin well. also in case you may have read this (im sure you hve as i did any many others) cubes do not benefit from a 'cold shock' either. only certain cold weather species will benefit from that.

you dont want intense light until fruiting time,
I've never given my colonizing jars anything but the normal light that is in a room at day time.

dont keep the jars in an incubator and dont hide them in the dark.
put on shelves, done deal.
