NW freeze
    #2057031 - 10/30/03 02:19 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

...A Freeze Warning Has Been Issued For Northwest Oregon And Southwest Washington Tonight And Friday Night... that sucks a lot.

And I was going to go around today ;(. Does it usually need to rain the night or so before they will grow?

REMAIN BELOW FREEZING IN MOST AREAS SATURDAY NIGHT.

Shit! Look at this forecast:

Portland 10-day forecast

Given my inexperience, am I going to need to wait another week, or will the rainy days possibly bear fruits for me?

I've heard that, but I also heard that a cold shock followed by rain is really good for cyans. Can someone knowledgeable in NW woodloving mushrooms provide some insight? (MJ?)

AS long as it is not a three day freeze. If that occurs then they are mostly all gone for the season. I have been here in the late 1970s, 1977 when it snowed the day before thanksgiving and thaen the next day i found blue circles snowleverl and there were cyans under the snow. but they were already up at that time.

mj

I do not think it froze in the city of Seattle last night although it was a little cold.

the ground sure hasnt froze but this cold northerly wind is really drying things out i kinda like that tho as a nice naturaly dried cyan seems to maintain potency well as opposed to really moist cyans that tend to ozidize (bluing) soon after picking.

I think the "freeze" has been extended. However it is more just cold ass wind than anything. The freeze part seems to be a description of how they expect the wind and the rain (which hasn't really shown itself) to interact with one another. Lets hope the cold ass wind goes away before it decides to rain again.

http://www.weather.com/weather/local/84321?lswe=84321&lwsa=WeatherLocalUndeclared

That's the forcast where I live Logan, Utah. says rain in the following week.  But there is 4 inches of snow outside. It's been snowing since last friday so any chance? Cause it hasnt rained here or had any precipitation since july or something so I've had to chance to look this year :frown: I usually find a great abundance of edible mushrooms shaggy mains fo example some morels and oysters once in a while.  But no rain and no humidity = shit house for me.  So now thats its frozen and will rain now.  What do you think?

In my experience frost does not seem to hurt Cyans or Stunzii. If (or rather when) it goes back to warm rain and above freezing at night many mushrooms (edible and active) will be back even IF the frost has temporarily bothered them.
I have found stunzii fruiting after hard frosts in years past in the Portland area once the weather has warmed and normal warm rain has returned. Cyans seem to be less able to take hard freezes. At least in my neck of the woods last nights frost wasn't anything I'd worry about. Just bring back the rain - the little gems will be there.

All the stunzii pins are still on my lawn and it has frozen pretty good the last two nights, they aren't dead, just haven't grown very much.

I dont know what the future has in store or what to predict about the season. I did notice 2 years ago after some really cold spells that there were still fruits popping up around christmas. This year was turning out to be the best I have seen until the last weeks frost came along. I checked some cy beds that have been prolific so far this year on Friday and the cys were not healthy. The caps were shriveled and the stems were really thick without much support from the mycellium underneath. When I would go reach out and pick them they would just fall over. Another bed that produced alot 10 days ago with alot of pins has pretty muched stopped and the caps were small with big stems . The caps had turned a dark blue and were hard to see. A week ago at the bed there were about 100 pins. Yesterday I only picked about 30 without any sign of pins. They were really strong though I put 3 fresh ones in some Ginkgo tea and couldnt believe the potency. So far everyone has complained that the shrooms are too strong they didnt need to take as many as they did.
