that is unusual. maybe the pressure cooker dried them out. was there any water left in it when you were done pcing? how long were they in the incubator? do you have a thermometer inside the incubator?

supposedly myc. generates heat inside of the jars, this could have influenced it some. Also, if you have a digital thermometer it may be off, mine is off by 3 degrees...just enough to bake a jar out. I keep my jars at 82 degrees and that seems to work just about perfect, but cubies have been known to do ok at lower temperatures...just you might have to wait a little longer.

Never had a problem with 86 before.
Seems to work for BRF and grains.
Only 4 days from spore in the incubator.

Um...just wondering, but aren't you going to have a hard time getting that cake out of the jar since it doesn't have a tapered lid?

Can you only do that with popcorn substrate (which is what I think that is)? And does spawning mean it's used to spawn more substrate?

Sorry Myco I should have mentioned that the substrate in that jar is rye berrys. I like them cause they hold more water then most the other grains. I plan to just case these. I have no need for bulk which is another good use for them.

actually..i have the same type of terrarium that magash has posted..two tubs..one inside the other with water in the bottom..filled up about half way to the side of the top tub, a fish tank heater at the bottow of the bottom tub.i set it originally 86 degrees...which ended up drying my cakes out in three days..so i truned it down now..to about 74 to 76 degrees...im just scared..cause the mycelium isnt growing to fast...alot of my jars show spots but no major growth yet...just wondering if the heat should be closer to 78 to 80 degrees..but i dont want to risk the chance of drying out my cakes...
i also steam sterilize my jars..and i check them all after i cooked them to make sure they still have moisture inside the jar.

thermometer, leave it in the water in the bottom. Set the temp to 85 F, check one a day to make sure the setting is correct (the settings on the submersible heaters can be way the fuck off!!!) So us the thermo to tell you what the temperature really is. This should cut your time down to 2 weeks for full colunization. puggy

Put a little water pump in there and it will mix the water for more even heating that way all the jars get the same heat. The ones on the bottom usually get more with the standard set up.
