Grow Log (Standard PF Cakes) First Grow/Post
    #20510800 - 09/02/14 03:53 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Howdy y'all!

After reading over the forum and different teks for a year I've finally decided to jump in and give this mycology thing a go. This is a log of my first grow (and likely all subsequent PF grows.)

Basics for my PF grow(s):
Standard PF substrate ratio
No pressure cooker
No lids (2 layers of tin foil)
Half pint jars (regular mouth and wide mouth)
2 injection points, flamed needles between jars, not injection points

I recently birthed my first 3 BRF cakes (PES Hawaiian) and have them in a shotgun fruiting chamber (after a 12 hour dunk, no roll.) They were inoculated on July 17th and birthed August 31st. This seemed like a long time and they weren't completely white with mycelium (as you can see in the photos below, taken September 1st.) I decided to birth them despite not looking 100% colonized because it seemed that growth had stopped. So they're just hanging out in their tank for now.

While I was waiting for my first jars to colonize I tried and failed to do 2 different liquid cultures. I finally got it right the third time by using 1.5 tsp of organic honey to one half pint jar of water. My Cambodian and PES Hawaiian jars took off quickly. My Penis Envy Uncut is showing signs of growth but much less than the others (see pictures below, taken September 2nd.) These LC jars were inoculated on August 25th. I used Cybers Liquid Culture Tek and Cybers Self Healing Injection Point Lids to make my LC and jars- however, I did not use a glove box like he suggests.

PES Hawaiian

On August 25th I also inoculated two half pint jars each of Penis Envy, Pink Buffalo, and Mazatapec into standard BRF cakes with two inoculation points. They're all making great progress however, the PE is going at a slower rate than the others. Photos below were taken September 1st (below.)

Mazatapec:

Pink Buffalo:

Penis Envy:

That's where I'm currently at and will update as more happens. I'm currently contaminate free and hope to keep it that way. I'm always open to suggestions and (constructive) criticisms.

Cheers and happy growing!

Cool, looking good!
You probably should have rolled in verm tho, especially cus you only dunked for 12 hours. They look pretty healthy tho considering they didn't colonize completely!
Also your holes in your SGFC look a little too spaced out. They should be 2" apart.
Other than that, good luck man! And welcome to the world of mycology!

The responses on this thread are proof people skim posts instead of reading them.....
If they actually aren't 100% colonized, then they are pretty boned.  Trich will beat it out.  Also it looks like they weren't dunk and rolled, which might be a good thing at this point, because you can see contams faster, which will invariably come if that's exposed substrate.

Mycelium doesn't stall for no reason.  It usually means the presence of bacterial contamination.  Or low moisture content.

Were those online-bought cakes?  They look a little off?  (the ones in the FC)

Watch RR's PF tek video if you havent already.

Off the LC jars? I ask because it seems hazardous to take the foil off the substrate jars considering they don't have the lids, just two layers of foil. Thanks for the tip!

I think the moisture content was low. They seems much more shrunken than others that I've seen. But no, they weren't bought online. Just a first at-home attempt. I've watched this video before and used it as my basis for making my first cakes (minus the lid part, I followed the directions from Fungiminds.com for the tin foil bit.) I'm curious as to why the moisture content would be so off though.

So much has happened (well, enough to excite a first time grower!) I took everyone's advice and removed the tin foil and it's been great! I was skeptical about the dry verm being enough to prevent contamination but so far so good. I also added a digital thermometer and hygrometer to better monitor the SFC conditions.

My liquid cultures have grown beautifully. I was able to get a few syringes of the PES Hawaiian made up and inoculated 4 BRF jars. Below is the progress of the jars (pic taken on the 11th of September.) They were inoculated on the 4th of September.

I took rotating pictures for all of the different inoculation points.

My second round of BRF cakes are all doing great and should be fully colonized over the next few days. Below are pictures that were taken on the 11th of September of the jars that were inoculated on the 25th of August.

Mazatapec:

Pink Buffalo:

Penis Envy:

ANNNNND! I have my first fruiting body from my first batch of 3 BRF cakes. The pin picture is from the 11th of September and the later one is from this morning (9/14.)

Pinning (gotta look through the hole):

Growing:

While production isn't my ultimate goal it's really rewarding to see this whole thing come to fruition if even a little bit. I'm mostly in this for the experience and know how. I work with plants everyday but fungi are a bit more mysterious.

Yay learning!

Why didn't you roll that cake in verm after everyone told you that you should?

Lol. I don't do everything people tell me I should. However, I'll definitely be rolling the next set of cakes (there were only 3 that didn't get rolled). In all honesty I just spaced it the first time. You live and learn right? I try not to take life too seriously sooo yeah.

The holes are probably too big but other than the spacing guide I didn't find any reference to size in any of the videos or teks I've looked at. I used the smallest wooden drill bit I had (standard bits wouldn't make it through the plastic.)

Again, this is all a learning process so I'm not super concerned that I didn't get it 100% on the first try.
