Brown spot?!
    #20559397 - 09/12/14 06:56 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hey all,

I've been experimenting with some jars and flasks, and I let this flask sit fully colonized for over a week (I did this on purpose to see how long it would keep).

What is this brown spot? I've never seen anything like it.

Can you get a closer picture of the spot? What species is that? What is up with your lid? What were the storage conditions?

Species is cube

It's a ceramic autoclavable lid designed for gas exchange with a built in filter disk. I can't get any closer with my camera without getting out of focus.

In my exp when I let mycelium sit colonizing too long it starts getting bacteria infections. Usually yellow in color and mucus-like in texture. The mycelium usually does not recover from it. That brown spot in your pic kind of resembles something similiar to what I have experienced.

I had a whole batch of grain bags that I had left sit on the shelf a bit too long and about half of it didnt spawn.

Next time I'm definitely going to let the mycelium out of its colonization stage ASAP.

Bacteria isn't a contaminant of fully colonized spawn.

I'd have to say either your spawn was already heavily contaminated with bacteria before it reached full colonization, or the spot is metabolites and not bacteria, or you have some kind of mold growing and not mushroom mycelium.

You should have good a idea of which it is just by the smell. It's not unusual for metabolites to form in fully colonized that's being stored.
