gonna put up some pics tonight of the bags, just a few left to reach 100%

as far as cold shocking/casing, would u guys suggest cold shock in bag, then open and case, or case first, then cold shock, then put into fruiting?

When I fruited mine, I didn't cold shock them. Just cased them and put them at 60-65 degrees F.

cool thanks terry!
was thinking of casing with peat and oyster flour @ 10%, not pasteurized.  also thinking of mixing a little local soil in as well, to add microbes.  any thoughts on that?

My notes show that I cased with 20 parts sphagnum peat moss to one part gypsum and one part calcium carbonate (chalk). I moistened this with fresh soil water for the microbes. I have no idea if Blewits prefer something else.

ok cool thanks terry!!
also have some leaf matter collected from a wild blewit patch.  was thinking of blending some up, diluting it, and adding to some of the bags in the casings.  kind of a less intensive way of the tradd cotter microbe dilution technique from his book.  at this point, it would take way too long to carry out the entire procedure he has outlined for serial dilutions of microbes in casings.  but hopefully in the future, there will be time for an undertaking like that!!

While I dont dispute Terry's comments and Stamets also doesnt report cold shocking be required, the isolates I use here in Australia will not pin unless exposed to 2-3 days of very cold temps. In the wild here they dont start appearing until just after the first frosts.

The commercial growers in France do not cold shock so undoubtedly strain specific.

Those bags look fantastic. I wish you massive success. Best tasting mushroom in my opinion.

Ive cased mine with mainly peat-based mixes. Ive never used leaf litter but many texts say its worth the effort.

so, as usual, super busy and had little time until last night to case.
out of the 20 remaining bags, we only cased 10.  wanted to case the other 10 last night as well, but it fell thru.  basically, we were going to use leaf matter from the woods that the blewits were fruiting from, grind it up with water in a blender, and hydrate the casing with it, in hopes of providing the particular microbes they need.  the leaf water was collected and stored in the fridge, but when i opened it last night, there was some mold in it, so it will just have to wait.
recipe is based on Terry M's suggestion, peat with 2 parts limestone flour and 1 part gypsum, brought to field capacity, un pastuerized

once we moved them into fruiting, we sprayed the top of the casings lightly with wood ash water @ Ph9, just to be safe.

also made substrate for the remaining nuda spawn bag.  w/o getting into %'s, its half composted manure, half composted leaf matter, some sawdust and a tiny tiny bit of bran and gypsum.  also did two bags just composted manure.

temps at steady 55f.  60% of the casings are colonizing the sides first, despite wiping the myc off before casing.  the others look like the above.  hoping for the best!

we also froze 2 bags for 24 hours, then cased and fruited.  ill get pics from outdoor as soon as i can.
