In australia they take two forms: a very brown capped version that grows under pine trees of various sorts and another that is a milder coloured cap and seems bigger that grows under eucalypts and other natives. Probably just the same mushroom with different phenotypes for different substrates.

Im sure and I have read that blewits can be grown off wood-based substrates but i had no luck with those at all. It runs like blazes through composted rye grass seed or pine needles though - although not quite at a quart in 6 days speed.

wow, great links!!  u truly are a blue meanie!!

well i will update with what happens.  i need to go to the recycling center and get some leaf compost and poo.  I'm going to keep my eye out for pine needles.

if i attempt my own composting, in a 5 gallon, do u suggest turning it at any point?

sorry for delay on updates.

with the help of two friends, 22 bags of substrate were inoculated with a 6qt grain bag on 10/15.
substrate with all of them were the same.  hardwood oak sawdust, 10% bran, some straw, and some leaf litter (wood ash added, but very little)

i checked yesterday and the mycelium has started to spread nicely.

another 6 qt grain bag is ready to go.  with this one, there will be a more varied substrate.  the compost center for some reason still has not fixed their "sifter" so we can't get anything from them except composted manure.  so about 5 bags will be composted manure, another five will be dried manure/leaf litter, and another five i plan on drying up spent substrates of both oysters and cubensis, re supplementing, hydrating, sterilizing, and inoculating.  this might not take place until next week though.

ill get a picture up of the current bags progress tonight.

some of the bags are going a lot slower than the others :frown:  probably half of them are about 90%, the other half about 65%.
we brought two bags that were about 98% to a local farm that has a hoop house set up to fruit outdoors.
still haven't spawned the other grain bag yet, life getting in the way and all:oldman2:

here is something kinda weird though.  the remaining grain leftover from inoculating those bags, i brought home to spawn to a pasteurized substrate instead of a sterile one, just to try.  i didn't refrigerate it, and after several days, all the pigment leaked out of the mycelium into a purple puddle in the bag....

Whoa that's awesome!  That would be cool to make a dye out of...
