Lepista nuda
    #20552660 - 09/11/14 11:08 AM (9 years, 6 months ago)

yo guys!

have a qt of Lepista nuda ready to spawn or expand.  just nocced another qt up last night.

was originally planning an outdoor thing, with leaf compost.  but i was wondering if anyone has done these inside, and if so, how they did it.

any input would be appreciated!!

the blue color of the mycelium is mystifying btw.  almost like an active species!!  i tried to get a shot of it, but its not coming out well.  u can see it around the edge

thx!!

yes this was something I was gonna play around with last year.  had 50lbs of grain spawn i let go bad. :frown:

may have even lost my culture. but when the myc aged, that purple was very striking!

Sort of like chicken of the woods, I think it's a strain thing.  And probably some sort of biological fruiting trigger, like a bacterium or mold.

anywho- there's some people in france that grow them in large bags in what looks like a cave or tunnel system.  they look pretty pale.  but i think they must get top dollar because I think they send them all to NYC!

I've grown Lepista nuda in filter patch bags. I grew them in sawdust, and cased them with peat moss. Mine seemed to like a fruiting temperature of 60-65 degrees F. Also gave the a humidity of about 85% during the day and 65% humidity at night.

well i have 7 qts of colonized grain in a filter bag.  its healthy (i can take a pic tomoro)

after reading several threads on here....im still in the clouds on this one.

Terry M pulled it off indoors on supplemented sawdust cased with peat.

i have access to zoo poop, leaf litter compost, and sawdust (mainly oak) and standard hard wood pellets.

im gonna run under the assumption microbes are not needed during colonization, but are for fruiting.

planning on sterilized bags of:

zoo poo
zoo poo/leaf litter
leaf litter/sawdust
spent oyster substrate (want to re supplement, but with what and how much?)

then casing with untreated peat with 10% oyster flour.
ill update as i go.
the mycelium is so blue/purple, it looks like blueberry yogurt

edit:  oh shoot, Terry already is here...so cool.  any recommendations?  do u know what kind of sawdust u were using at the time?  i have oak on hand, can probably get another species if suitable.  leaf litter compost is made by recycling center here outside the city (also where the zoo delivers poo)

shot of grain master.  hopefully u can see the purple hue...i tried to put it in front of a white background, but the light in my house is pretty yellow i guess
ill take a pic of the spawn bag outside in hope of better lighting, because it really is some beautiful mycelium

Hi - i love Lepista nuda and saeva and have been working with numerous clones and strains for the last two years.

first thing ive found is that bluish or grey or white myc colonises  ok but rarely pins. Best myc for either blewit is lilac darkening with age.

Secondly i tried saw dust, rye grass seed, composted rye grass seed, manure, composted manure, leaf litter and finally composted pine needles ( we get 100s of wood blewits where i live every year growing on pine needles).

Composted rye grass seed, manure and pine needles were the best substrates and were thecquickest to colonise - pin formation occured after cold shock and casing. Blewits need almost frost temps then maintained low temps to fruit indoors or wild.

Substrate weight to small fruit body weight returns are a problem.

Outdoor beds are way easier and probably better yields.

Saeva is impressive and seems to like rye geass seed off which it pibs like mad.

nice, thanks blue!!

so at no point did u sterilize anything for indoor fruiting?  it was just composted substrate?

any insight on casing?

Well I'm coming over. I actually love the way these look wild. I am super excited to see how they come out. I remember finding some in the sF bay area a few years ago. Rock on. BL.

Hi no sorry i sterilised everything as generally they are very slow to colonise. Ill post some pics later.

i love the taste if these guys

An example of a poor Lepista nuda strain - its kinda blue rather than white but it looks white:

Some awesome mycelium - more lilac than shown in the image:

And some lovely wild collections from which clones came:

hmmm well I'm not sure now if mine is more blue or lilac.... its very hard to show in a photo, the color does not come out right unless u see it in real life.
from a regular quarter sized agar wedge, it will colonize a qt in 6 days, which is pretty fast IME.  i have seen oysters do that, and sometimes hericium.

do you or anyone else have anything to say about using a freezer at any point? like a freezer cold shock?

can u go over the way u did ur composted rye grass seed/manure/pine needles before u sterilized it?
i live in Philly, and pine needles are hard to come by without a car.  any thoughts on leaf litter instead?

here is spawn bag made from the grain master a few posts above.  the qt jar next to it will be expanded exactly the same.

any thoughts on spawn:sub ratio?

You can definitely see some color to the myc. in those pics!  Looking forward to seeing how it goes

I would love to get me some of that. I think the idea of growing these in cased tubs seems doable. From what I've seen of French cultivation. I would try a supplemented sawdust sub, then case it. Maybe mix a small amount of pasteurized compost into your casing for the beneficial micro fauna.

Aloha actually sell the albino commercial strain used by the French farm (and occasionally in Australia). I remember reading it is also pretty slow.

Lilac is basically light purple. Most of mine are light purple that gets darker when they fully colonise an agar plate or when the mycelium is exposed to fresh air after colonisation.

I composted these substances simply by letting them degrade in a plastic bin that kept them wet for three weeks or so. it was covered for the first week then left open.

A quart in 6 days is extremely fast for Lepista nuda. You must have a cracking strain there mate. Even the commercial strains used by mushroom farms are regarded as pretty damn slow. Some Commercial agaricus farms in Australia grow lepista nuda off similar compost to agaricus with a similar casing. Apparently it can be done. I was told it was only done then every now and then because yield weight versus substrate weight was super low.

Last thing is Ive worked mainly with Australian strains of blewits which according to one study formed primordia more easily and at slightly warmer temps than european strains.

The Lepista nuda cultivated by the French farm and by an agaricus farm in Australia is apparently an albino which made a friend of mine wonder whether it was actually Lepista saeva.

Aloha do have a commercial strain that i was told was this strain.

Looking at these photos now I see that the mycelium was not lilac on substrates:

Ignore the one on the bottom right. its something else.

Actually I think only the jar on the left is Lepista. I cant remember :frown:

Here is a lovely group i picked recently. I pulled the mycelium for some because I wanted to transplant ( i know its poor form but I hope you can excuse )
