I believe they trained the mujahideen to fight the Russians, then later fought the mujahideen in Afghanistan also. Seems to be a familiar story. But it may be the line of best fit. This way they can just throw money and weapons at the issue without losing American lives. I guess they are crossing bridges as they get to them. Also it shows that they really can't trust these people, they have no loyalty or allegiance to America at the end of the day.

Theyre bombing the place to disrupt ISIS as an organisation. Their trying to fix their own fuck up and prevent the entire area from falling under the explicit control of radical extremists. Same thing they did with hitler. Stop them before they become too strong.
I think bombing is the way to go, provided they minimise collateral damage... Which is problematic given that these types generally cloak themselves under the guise of civilians.
Why risk your own lives? They learned that in iwojima. Doesn't matter how superior your ground forces are, it's about their will power. Same reason some parts of the Middle East have never been conquered -- because they will fight to the death by whatever means necessary. This skip the fist fight and attack your enemy in a way that they cannot defend or retaliate against.
I mean you always hear old war folk talk about the terror of snipers on the battlefield. Fuck snipers, what about the terror of nearly invisible jets dropping 200 pound laser guided bombs that can level a city block in one shot?
Apparently you hear the jet roaring through, hear the whistle of the missle dropping, and if close enough hear/feel the explosion. Let alone at night time when the explosion is so bright that it almost turns to daylight for a split second.
Think about when you hear a normal passenger 747 plane fly over your head. You can hear it easily a few suburbs away. Now think that that same plane could be about to drop bombs with a range that covers the entire area. Scary shit!
