PF Tek With Multiple Flours
    #20541236 - 09/09/14 12:32 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So I have had success with BRF and I decided I wanted to create my own recipe of flour. I used 1/2 pound Quinoa Flour, 1 pound Rye Flour, and 2 pounds Brown Rice Flour. I mixed everything really well and plan on using it for the PF Tek with 1/2 pint wide mouths. I'll keep this updated if people are interested. Any comments/questions/concerns are appreciated.

I have not mixed anything besides the flours together yet im waiting a couple days until some jars get birthed. Then I will mix some and let you know!
Edit: Did you mean the flours texture?

the mix in general, some grains are more sticky as a flour and i found better texture with a little less water when i used wheat

Ill keep that in mind when I start mixing. I want the same consistency as plain BRF correct?

I thought about Quinoa, but that shit got expensive. Looking forward to see how this turns out as well.

Interesting, I've though about the same before. I had to get some brown rice the other day and I was at the grocery store getting the usual rice, seen this stuff and got me thinking aabout using different rices/grains for a PF tek.

You should make experiments using just one type of flour per jar, and see the difference in mycelium growth. I've heard of people having success with rye flour, it would be interesting to see if there's a better type of flour for PF tek! Can't wait to see your results

I've worked with all those types of flower op, when making pf cakes.

It does not matter what type of flower is used, brf will yield you the exact same results as rye/quinoa/wbs/flax/hemp seed etc.... Hemp seed is a expensive flower to use

What makes the difference is how much moisture is retained by the cake, nutrients (when added in proper amounts) are irrelevant to a cakes performance.

If you just stick with brf, you can add gypsum and you'll have a super cake with plenty of minerals for fruit body formation and not have to worry about endospores in the grain flower.

So you can add gypsum to BRF cakes?! Is this those fucking monster cakes I see around the forum where you can hardly see the cake cus theres so much fruit??? Cus I can NEVER get my cakes to look that good...
So how much gypsum would you add in a typical 2:1:1 PF???

I thought that was for only whole grains? I mean the entire grain its self not the type.

So I decided I would just start with some new 1/2 pint jars. I mixed my ingredients and had the same consistency as BRF alone. The ratio was the same. I kept it a bit more dry because im inoculating with a Burma MS syringe and a little dry is better than a little to wet. Im going to let them sit overnight to let any possible endospores germinate. Then im going to PC for 90 minutes at 15 psi.

Well I work nights and im currently at work. I was planning on PCing them when I get home. Let them cool while I sleep and knock them up when I wake.
Edit: I was thinking grain flour contains endospores just like grain. I mean its the same thing just pulverized to powder form.

I pressure cooked the jars and finally knocked them up today with Burma MS. I'll update with pictures as they progress.

Good luck. I've been looking around my house thinking about tweaking brf recipe with 'adjuncts' (minor quantities of) ground: millet, malted barley. I have subbed ground basmati for brown rice. When I grind in the coffee maker, I leave the trace coffee ground remnants in. I do have a line of jars with a few variations, curious to see if any one jumps ahead of the others etc.

No growth yet I am starting to lose hope :/ I'm going to try some Cambodian MS in a couple days if see no growth. If those are duds as well we will all know that BRF if the way to go.
