Fastest known organism on the planet is??? Fungus!!! * 1

We all know that poo can harbor some pretty funky microorganisms, but one you may not have heard of is the fungal genus Pilobolus, that's often found on herbivore excrement. These fungi shoot out their spores at speeds of up to 25 meters per second. While that might not sound hugely impressive, their acceleration is incredible as they can reach top speed in two millionths of a second. Check out this awesome video from Earth Unplugged of these fungal cannons in slow motion.

I spy a theme for Pixar's next cgi fable masterpiece: Turbo Fungus anyone?

On a side note, this is yet another amazing factoid about fungus that I didn't know. So far, networks of fungus are the LARGEST organisms on Earth, the spores are the most ROBUST organisms, making them capable or surviving unthinkable conditions; they are that certain color which makes them capable of being pummeled by more intense UV rays than any other organism, they can bio-degrade oil and even plastic, and now they are the F-A--S---T----E-----S------T!?!?! Maybe they should have said "quickest".

Almost forgot the cherry on top: Some can obviously teleport you to hyperspace.

Wow they be fast! Gotta love fungus...they're going to change the world

Difficulty has more to do with reading abillity and ability to precisely follow directions. You need no knowledge of chemistry whatsoever, you just need to understand some basic principles as simple in concept as: water boils at 100C and freezes at 0C. Otherwise all published syntheses of organic and inorganic compounds can be reproduced successfully by pretty nearly anyone with at least average intelligence. Problems always have to do with availability of materials, not esoteric knowledge.
